April 2007 Newsletter

NEXT MEETING:
Our next meeting will be on Friday, April 13th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the library. Our club model show will be on Friday, May 11th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone needs to participate in this event to complete their project. The club will supply lunch. To accommodate schedules, I had to juggle the class list a round. Lunch will be from 1 to 1:30 and we will have pizza. Snacks and drinks would be appreciated. At this meeting we will be discussing the class list and everyone will be entering their horses at that day, no exceptions. Therefore it is vital that your daughter knows which models she is showing and has this information ready. We will fill out the entry forms that day. She needs to know what tack she has and which models she will be using.

Hopefully we will also have time to make props and finish the bridles for the show. Other wise I have some props they can use. We will also be judging the photos form our sister club in Canada. This will be a very busy meeting as we have lots to cover.

OTHER TOPICS:
4-H Promotion night: This went really well and all the members did an outstanding job promoting the club and 4-H in general. We even have new members and stirred up lots of interest.

CANDY BARS:
Candy sales have been fantastic. The girls are doing an awesome job.

DEMONSTRATIONS:
So far, only Aspen and Mary have done their demonstrations. Please encourage your daughter to get her demonstration done early this year. I had hoped they would be done before the model horse show in May. If they are not done ALL WILL BE DUE AT THE JUNE MEETING. THEY HAD 7 MONTHS TO DO THIS ALREADY. If you have questions about this, please call me. For those that dont do their demonstrations at or before the June meeting, they will be assigned an impromptu topic at the that day.

HORSE CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS:
Members of the model club are eligible to attend the 4-H Horse Camp. There is a partial scholarship available to anyone who works during the horse sale. For more information, contact Katie or Shannon at the 4-H Office

IDAHO HORSE OF THE YEAR:
Deadline is MAY 1st, 2007. No late entries accepted.

RECYCLING PROJECTS:
The last recycling check was for $54.75 and has been sent on to the Abaco Barb horses. We will no longer be accepting cell phones. To date we have raised $218.25 for the horses through this program. Dont forget to bring in your pop-tops, also. We will have a cartridge collection bin at the Horse Sale.

PHOTO RELEASES: This policy is coming from the University and everyone needs to sign yes or no for the release. Below is the county policy. At the next meeting, I will have a master sheet that parents must sign for the office. If you have any questions, please call the office at 756-2824. If a parent doesnt sign, we have to assume the answer is no and the following policy will be enforced.

What Happens When You Check the No box on your Photo Consent

  • Club & Project Leaders will to be notified by the 4-H program Assistant.
  • Pictures will not be taken by Extension Staff or Leaders for record books.
  • Youth will not be included in organized and group photos from camps, shows and award ceremonies.
  • Youths photo will not be submitted to the newspaper by Leaders or Extension Staff.
  • Accidental photography of a youth in a group setting will be deleted.
  • If the photo consent box is not marked it is considered a no in the photo consent box.

Because:

All photos taken by Extension Staff and shared with our office by volunteers may be used in promotional items, news releases, educational power points and on the Extension website.

Be reassured that all photos are kept in the possession of the Extension Office and not distributed to other organizations or for items not associated with 4-H or Extension. If you elect to sign no on this release, please inform your daughter that she can not be in any group photos.

LEMHI COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE WEBSITE: http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/lemhi/ Phone: 756-2824.

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, please call me.

If anyone can bring refreshments to the meetings, it would be appreciated. We would need enough for at least 12 people.

MODEL SHOW INFORMATION:

This is an event that requires preparation at home. Please encourage your daughter to work on this before the show. There will only be a 5-minute break between classes so they need to have things ready to go. They need to be there at 9 a.m. so they have time to prepare.

Each class, except halter, requires a description (explanation) card of what the horse is doing. Example In trail, the horse is standing quietly next to the mailbox while the rider removes the mail. This is extremely important and something that should be done at home. The card can be a simple piece of paper or an index card. Exhibitors can use the same model and set-up they did in previous years.

Some exhibitors like to have low cut boxes or edged cookie sheets to hold sand or grave to make their entries look more realistic. The ridge on the box or sheet should be about only an inch high so it doesnt distract from the display.

The day of the show I will have my props box, tacky wax, pliers and other emergency necessities. But members need to know what they are going to do for each class beforehand. Not wait until the morning of the show and then decide. Please help them prepare for this at home.

This is a learn by doing event so dont worry if your daughter says she doesnt know what shes doing, shell catch on really fast. There will be plenty of help the day of the show. Tell her not to stress over it. Call if you have the slightest question.

Also, make sure your daughter eats breakfast or brings something with her. This is very important!
