April 2006 Newsletter

Our next meeting will be on April 8th at the Lemhi County Fairgrounds at 11 a.m. for the Horse Sale. We will meet till noon, then I have to go to work at the sale. After that time members will not be a part of our organized meeting, so if they are staying there, they are on their own. I will not be available to supervise them. Also, members must wear covered shoes or boots. NO SANDLES OR OPEN-TOED SHOES. For insurance reasons, everyone must have paid her $5 4-H enrollment fee before the sale. April 6th will be the last day to enroll in the Model Club for this year. During the sale we will have a scavenger hunt and sell the remaining candy bars. Anyone who has candy money needs to bring it to the sale.

Our next club meeting will be April 19th at the Commissioners Annex from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Members need to bring any models they will be using for the model show as we will be entering classes and discussing the show. Registration papers are also due that day for a model to be eligible to show. For this meeting, Katy and Kelsey A. have signed up to do their demonstrations. Kelsey A. has offered to bring the snack and Kellsie H. offered to bring the drinks. Thanks for doing this. We will supply cups and napkins. Anyone who has candy money or copies of the Just About Horses magazine needs to bring them to this meeting.

The March meeting was really productive. It was our first meeting with officers and an official agenda. It was a little confusing but I think everyone did a great job and will have their jobs down pat before long. Hannah and Mary did their demonstrations and Jamie did an impromptu demonstration when she showed us how to make mailbox obstacles. Following that, the girls broke into two groups and did some very interesting skits on horse safety. We also discussed the horse sale, worked on model registration papers and record books.

A few months ago we discussed doing heritage jumps which represented various countries. These are due at the May 17th meeting. Please remind your daughters about this project. Aspen and Kelsey A selected Ireland, Jami-Native American, Mary- England, and Hannah-Canada or an Ocean theme.

Our model show, which all members need to participate in to complete their project, will be April 29th. I handed out a copy of the classlist at the last meeting and everyone should be thinking about what they are going to do for the show. Dont hesitate to ask questions if you dont know whats going on and dont worry if youre not sure what to do. This is a learn by doing experience and everyone will do just fine!

Recently the National 4-H program has become a part of the Presidents Volunteer Service and our club is now listed as a certifying organization. For this project, members are encouraged to keep track of their volunteer hours and any youth who volunteers for 50 or more hours a year are eligible for an award from the President. Adults can qualify after 100 hours a year. For more information on this project, visit their website at www.presidentialserviceawards.gov .

As for the Abaco Barb Youth Project, to date we have presented ten awards with several more in the works. Our newest recipient is an eight year-old from the UK that raised over $200 for the horses by hosting a raffle at her school. So far recipients have ranged from 8 to 15 years old and came from ID, MT, UT OH, PA and NJ.

The wheels have started turning for our Breyer Fun Day in October. Hopefully we will be able to get the PAL horse costume from Breyer and if we can get the paperwork in early, Breyer will help with the advertising by putting it in their Just About Horses magazine and on their website.

I think thats all for right now. If you have any questions about the above events, please call me ASAP.

Dont forget to bring in any ink cartridges, cell phones or pop-tops for our service projects.

Parents introduction to the Salmon Model Horse 4-H Clubs model horse show

A model show is run much like a real horse show. Theres a list of classes and each member selects the model they feel is best suited for each class. The model must be wearing the appropriate tack and have the proper props for each class. A description card telling the judge what the model is doing is required for most classes and the lack of a card will lower the models score. Rules may vary from show to show but most rules are printed in the show program. For our show, each model being shown by a 1st or 2nd year member must have registration papers before they can show. All exhibitors must be dressed appropriately in a long-sleeved Western style shirt. This doesnt have to be an expensive show shirt. While boots and a hat are not required at this show, some 4-H shows do require them. Exhibitors may wear sneakers or any closed-toe shoes. No sandals or open-toed footwear. For the model show, we try to stay as close to a real horse show as possible.

Plan to arrive at the showgrounds no less than a half-hour before the show starts. Each exhibitor will be assigned a stall (table) in the stable area where they can set up their things. Each member has been given a classlist and their models have been pre-entered so they know what models go in what classes. The class list is set up to help reduce saddling time. There will be a strictly enforced time limit between classes. There will be two rings (tables) set up. While the judge is judging one ring, exhibitors can set up for the next class in the other ring. Exhibitors should already have an idea of what they are going to do for each class and have props and description cards ready to go. If their model is being judged, they can still set up their props in the second ring so all they have to do is add the model. Parents are welcome to provide minimal assistance in the stable area, but once the exhibitor approaches either arena, only the show staff may help them.

For their set-ups some members like to use a small piece of material or carpeting to set their models on. Others use a baking sheet with sides on it to hold sand. Neither are mandatory but enhance the over-all display. Rider dolls are not mandatory, but if they are used, they will be judged on correct position and dress. It is possible for a riderless entry to win over one with a rider. The judge is looking for attention to detail and little things can make or break a scene. After each class, the judge will discuss the award placings with the group.

If you have any questions about the model show, please contact me and dont hesitate to ask questions. This is a learn by doing project and often the first year members feel like they have no idea what is going on. They catch on really quick after the first few classes. There will be plenty of people there to help them.

As for awards, there will be mini ribbons for 1st to 6th place in each class and Champion and Reserve Champion exhibitor in each division as well as a Judges Choice. All members will be judged on the Danish System for their overall showmanship, sportsmanship and horse knowledge.

The most important thing about this show is for the members to have fun and learn, not who wins the most ribbons. Some exhibitors will have three or four models while others will only have one. Remember, judging is one persons opinion at that particular time.
