Iranian daily features Sultan Baraguir's martyrdom

January 29, 2006

The Iranian national newspaper, "Jumhuri-ye Islami" in Persian language features Sultan Sayyid Hadji Datu Amir bin Muhammad Baraguir's martyrdom in its Bahman 3, 1384 AHS (January 23, 2006) issue.

With a picture bearing this caption, "Amir Baraguir together with Hujjat al-Islam Dr. Ahmadi" (its English translation), the news report is entitled, "Shahadat-e Yeki az Rahbaran-e Shi'eh-ye Filipin" [The Martyrdom of One of the Shi'ah Leaders in the Philippines].

The said picture was taken at the closing ceremony of the International Congress on Imam Khomeini and the Revival of Religious Thought held in Tehran in June 1997, in which Dr. Ahmad Ahmadi, a prominent philosopher and professor at Tehran University, who was then the Chairman of the Conference's General Secretariat, was giving a token of appreciation to the late Sultan for his presented paper, "Imam Khomeini and the EDSA People's Power".

Due to unfamiliarity with the local terrain and incorrect translation into Persian of some parts of SMERI's eDigest "Baraguir of Maguindanao attains martyrdom" on January 12, 2006, however, the report is not free from inaccuracies. For example, the concept of Sultanate is not properly understood as shown in its description of the martyred Sultan as "the 25th Shi'ah leader of the province of Maguindanao" (its English translation).

This information about the featuring of the Sultan's martyrdom by an Iranian newspaper is made known to SMERI through the courtesy of the Asian and Oceania Affairs Office of the Ahl al-Bayt World Assembly (ABWA) based in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran.
