Going to Canada to study was the cause of it all. I chose to study Peace Camp for my Sociology Qualitative Methods course. Peace Camp was a protest camp against the Kuwait War parked in the middle of campus. There I got to know a couple of the people in MRI, the McMaster Recycling Inititative and life went downhill from there. MRI later became McMaster Earth Action and after I left, a PIRG (Public Interest Research Group). My main involvement was with the introduction of recycling to the campus. One of the big jobs was sorting all the paper into the main grades. The waste paper was mostly put into the right bins, but enough mistakes were made that we still had to do some sorting of the paper before it could be sent off. Then there was the composting project for the residences: we had four or five composters going in my final year and it went well. However, when I went back this summer (98) for a visit, the composters were gone. Wish I knew what happened to them. Back in Singapore, I joined Nature Society as a life member and used to help occasionally in SEC (Singapore Environment Council). Currently I'm interested in the flora and fauna of Singapore and their habitats. To help in recognising the thousands of species, I'm working on webpages with the pictures of different species organized taxonomically. |
