| Roger de Coverly is one of the most active members of the Slough 2 squad this season, playing regularly for Slough (in various leagues), his county Buckinghamshire, and also in large individual competitions such as the British Major Open and Hastings Challengers tournanments. It was the latter of these at which your webmaster first met him, and although I defeated him in our individual game, I found him to be a most courteous and amusing opponent, with a wit that can keep such Slough loud-mouths as Matthew Harbourne in check... He had a varied season for the team last year, scoring 2.5/5 with only the one draw. His first game, black against David Hulmes (2136), is a mystery to me, as the game seems lost straight out of the opening, a highly theoretical Ruy Lopez. Anyone who can properly explain it to me is invited to write in. He was then gifted four whites for his remaining games, from which he produced a useful run of 2.5/3, starting with an energetic demolition of Keith Gregory (2032), whose curious approach to the opening was swiftly punished. His next game also saw him the beneficiory of some dubious opening play against Brian Valentine (1968), but for once he missed a couple of tactics (the last of which is patricularly exquisite) that would have sealed the game, and had to be content with a draw. His next game against Andrew Gandy (2097) was much more tense, with a quiet Sicilian Rossolimo soon becoming tactical as Gandy set to work on de Coverly's kingside. He eschewed the oppurtunity to take material, however, and a mistake in the ending let de Coverly clear up. The final game against Julien Shepley (2131) was a similarly curious encounter, with his opponent again declining offered material, but in the end the kingside weaknesses were this time exploited, and he could not last long in the ending. However, this is the kind of aggressive chess we shall want to see more of for Slough next season. |
