Geoffrey
“GMAN” Robinson
began his quest at age 9 when he became a deejay and
writing battle rhymes at age 13. Born and raised in Florence, Alabama (home of
the Father of the Blues WC Handy) GMAN has always been surrounded by music; his
own father played piano, guitar, and worked as a club and radio deejay. After
graduating high school and a brief stint at the University of Alabama, GMAN
focused solely on rap music and sees it as a way of life and the only
alternative to the suppression encountered in the south.
Growing up G wanted to be recognized as a man, no longer a boy, hence he chose
his name for that reason. He felt his name would get him the recognition in
society he deserved. Through the years as GMAN has grown, his definition of
himself has matured. He at one point decided GMAN stood for Genuine Mad Ass
Nigga, due to the feeling of racism still existing in the south. Today, God is
My Answer Now, proves that GMAN the person and lyricist is maturing. His styles
range from blunt smoking hustler to pure knowledge spoken from the heart. He now
understands and says “all I need is God not people to recognize me”.
As a
member of Slave Kamp -his roots, friends and family- GMAN can identify with the
ups and downs of the project dwellers and the folks in the suburbs. “Slave Kamp
is a unification of the fact that people everywhere are living as slaves;
whether a slave to a drug, a job, money, an abusive relationship, whatever holds
them down.” says G.
GMAN
does music production including 2 former full length solo albums (“Realities”
and “Collectors Item”) and group album (“Slave Kamp: A Day in the Death of
America”). He also does songwriting for those who have checked his skills (“
Imma write some country stuff, get crazy loot!”). GMAN says “..in the end, this
music is all I know, all I have – it’s in my blood..I guess this is what I’m a
slave to; I’ll live by it, I’ll die by it!!!” And the beat goes on…..
