Preview
For the clash against the Tigers, Warriors coach Tony Kemp will start Iafeta Paleaaesina, Manu Vatuvei and Justin Murphy in place of suspended prop Jerry Seseu (7 weeks), Faumuina (4 weeks), and Meli (5 weeks). Tevita Latu is back and joins Lauaki on the bench.   The key to their fortunes rests in 3  areas, a go forward pack, the Stacey-Lance combo and defence.
Wests are without Scott Prince, on Queensland Origin duties and star Kiwi Benji Marshall from Whakatane is out with a shoulder injury.

Match Report
As master coach Jack Gibson once said, 'in football, if you are standing still, you're going backwards fast' .  Even Wests coach Tim Sheens was shocked by the ease with which the Tigers swept aside the Vodafone New Zealand Warriors 50-4.  "I didn't expect us to be that dominant," says Sheens in disbelief adding there is no way they expected to win like that, especially missing key injured players Benji Marshall, Scott Prince and Scott Sattler and playing three 19-year-olds off the bench.

It was an awful game for the Warriors who allowed Wests to run all over them and rack up 9 tries to 1.  Currently 6th on the premiership table Wests shape up as a serious contender for the finals series.  A major reason is Sheens, who in his second year at Wests has an impressive coaching record winning 232 of 456 games, a win percentage of  50.67%.  He has won 3 premierships out of 4 grand finals and contested 9 finals series.

Sheens stamp of experience showed in most aspects of the Tigers performance.  It was evident in the confidence displayed by try scorers, Invercargill born 20 year old centre Dene Halatau and centre partner Shane Elford.  Also in the halves as well as the individual brilliance of former Parrammatta fullback Brett Hodgson who scored
one, kicked 7 goals and gained huge metres from the back and from everywhere he injected himself in the play.  Former Warrior Robbie Mears also had a top game.

The Warriors were caught napping as the Tigers blasted out of the blocks with 3 tries, 2 of them through weak defence to grab a 16-0 lead after 16 minutes.  To their surprise that edge allowed Wests to gain control of the match early.  With the Warriors marker defence in disarray it became easier for Wests to execute their game plan effectively, making just one error in the first half, completing 19 of 21 first half sets while the Warriors were guilty of missing 21 first half tackles and 45 to Wests 17 overall.
The Tigers early arrival in Christchurch during the week and its pre match preparation was everything it panned out be at 34-0 at halftime with a fulltime roar of 50-4.

                                                                Indiscipline costs the Warriors 26-28
Rd 15       Warriors  26  v  Nth Qld Cowboys 28    Sunday  20 June      Ericsson Stadium  Auckland   Crowd 6793

Two weeks ago a gutsy win over the Raiders cost the Warriors 3 suspended players for 16 weeks in total.  Then the  Wests Tigers rolled them by 46 points.  Against the Cowboys the Warriors threw away the opportunity to salvage some winning pride through indiscipline. In extra time captain Monty Beetham messed up big time by conceding a penalty in front for a cheap high shot on Paul Rauhihi.  It was the major misery that decided the 28-26 outcome to the Cowboys.

Both teams grinded through a tough 80 minutes where the little things made the biggest difference.  The Cowboys were led by Rauhihi who gave his counterpart Beetham a lesson in captaincy.  One of the hardest working props in the NRL Rauhihi topped the Cowboys offloads (6), and gained the most metres (174) while making 16 tackles & 21 hitups.  Former Warrior Kevin Campion added the starch with a team high 32 tackles.

The Cowboys led 14-10 at halftime through tries by Matt Sing, David Myles and Neil Sweeney while Clinton Toopi and Evarn Tuimavave scored for the Warriors.  In the second half the Warriors gained momentum through tries to Vinnie Anderson and Faafili.  In front at 18-14, indiscipline, frustration and some crazy errors such as Toopi catching the kickoff with his foot outside the line crept into the Warriors game.  After repeated warnings from the ref, Beetham was sin binned in the 50th minute for a reckless tackle on Rauhihi.

In no time the advantage swung the other way as the Warriors surrendered 3 successive penalty goals to kicker Josh Hannay which handed the Cowboys a 20-18 lead.  The final 10 minutes was tense and exciting with the  Warriors hitting back to 26-20.  The home crowd sensed a win if they held their line.  But Matt Sing finished off with an awesome try converted from the sideline by Hannay to lock up a 26-26 scoreline.  Then in "golden point" time Beetham, not his teamates nor the ref, lost his cool.

Overall it was an improved performance but neither team would rattle the top 4 NRL teams.  Although they scored 6 tries to 4, the Warriors will have to get used to beating themselves, if their discipline, focus and mental attitude doesnt pick up.  In only his 3rd game back after being sidelined for 11 weeks through injury and suspension the Warriors captain needs to grow up and play up to his true potential, the fans have had enough misery.

Warriors Wairangi Koopu and Louis Anderson had big games on defence while Evarn Tuimavave's impact try, signalled he's ready for more game time.  Thomas Leuluai was sharp at dummy half but the goal kicking 1 out of 6 , was awful.  Next Saturday the Warriors face a Storm blowing up in Melbourne.

Warriors Stacey Jones and Hohaia face a formidable match winning halves combination in Scott Hill and Matt Orford.  The Warriors beat the Storm 20-14 in a

MATCH REPORT
Down 18-6 at halftime the Warriors posed a real  threat until Melbourne Storm delivered the knock out punch that shut them down in the 3rd quarter and
effectively put them away 42-6.

The Warriors defensive structure turned to custard as the Storm's main playmaker Matt Orford engineered a one sided thrashing 8 tries to 1.   In the second half the Storm clapped on the pace to score 24 unanswered points against a struggling defence that deteriorated into mistackles.

A refreshed Clinton Toopi in only his 2nd game back from a 5 week injury layoff gained 113 metres, looked dangerous and added sparkle to the midfield attack.
In contrast the Warriors key man Lance Hohaia  for some strange reason just wasnt on his game.   As the Storm dominated  Webb, Faafili, Vinnie Anderson
and Ropati all appeared sluggish, hesitant and indecisive while Richard Villasanti and Awen Guttenbeil stood up in the pack.   The aggregate loss of Motu Tony, Swann, Seuseu, Lauitiiti, PJ, Faumuina and Meli is beginning to bite deep.

Origin star Billy Slater turned in a blinder for the Storm as did Ben McDougall, David Kidwell and winger Matt King who scored 3 tries.  Robbie Kearns, Howe
and Kearney won the battle upfront while prop Alex Chan had a powerhouse game, slipping a nice offload for MacDougall to score.

MATCH REPORT
The Vodafone New Zealand Warriors snapped another 3 game losing streak by defeating a skillful Parrrammmattta Eels side 20-10 in  Auckland.
They stuck to a simple game plan - retain possession, run it up straight and hard and defend for 80.

Warriors Villasanti and Paleaaesina carted up the hard yards which assisted  the teams push down field where they mounted 2 big try scoring plays directed by Stacey Jones.  In the 11th minute Stacey fired a pass to Jerome Ropati who hit a hole for the first try, followed five minutes later by Toopi who touched down by the posts.  From his own half Stacey intercepted a stray pass in the 35th minute and dashed 60 metres to score and put the Warriors up 18-0 at halftime.

In the second half the Eels showed a lot of Parramatitude in forcing the Warriors to defend their red zone for long periods.  Despite the driving rain which made conditions atrocious there wasn't a time when it didn't look like the Eels could bounce right back into the game.  However the straw that broke the camel's back was the pride shown by the Warriors in scrambling and defending their line when they were being hammered.

The Eels had a right to be mad at themselves for squandering 3 try scoring opportunities when the tryline was begging. On 2 of those ocassions the winger had the drop on his opposite.  However the Eels English import Chris Thorman kept them in the hunt when he scored in the 53rd minute.  Minutes later
Tony Martin stretched the Warriors out to 20-6 with a penalty goal.  In the 66th Parrammatta winger Matt Peterson, who was always a threat made his
own luck with a clever try to make it  20-10.

Daniel Wagon, Witt, Peterson, Thorman, Pearson, Morris and NZ rookie Jack Afamasaga featured strongly for the 12th placed Eels.  Brian Smith in his
200th game as Eels coach was unhappy and very miserable about the loss.

Defence wins games and the Warriors defence proved resolute up the middle with the pack showing a lot of commitment to the donkey work.  The bottom
of the ladder was a lousy place to be.  This win was a tight thriller which should instill some confidence in their ability to stiffen up their defence as it wont gonna get any easier next Saturday night when the face a Shark attack in Sydney.

PREVIEW 7 July
With only 7 rounds to go after this weeks clash against the 8th placed Cronulla Sharks time is running out on the Warriors.  They need to start posting some credible back to back wins to put some daylight between them and the bottom of the table and to prove they are the real deal at home and away.

Sione Faumuina starts in the second row after serving a 4 match suspension with Lance Hohaia starting at five eighth. MATCH REPORT
It was a slippery night in Sydney when the Cronulla Sharks withstood a determined effort from the Vodafone Warriors to clinch a close 22-14 win.   But for some crucial handling errors the Warriors were always in the hunt.

Two tries to Matt Bickerstaff and Phil Bailey put the Sharks up 12-0 after 25 minutes.  Skipper Monty Betham touched down in the 30th minute to keep the Warriors within reach 12-4 at halftime.

In the second half Warriors reserve Wairangi Koopu charged over the line to score in the 48th minute.  At 12-10 the Sharks replied with a try to winger Nathan Merritt who fielded a bomb to score and further edge the Sharks up 16- 10.  Then in the 68th minute Stacey fired a pass to Warriors second rower Louis Anderson who hit  the hole to score but Martin failed with an easy conversion.

Down 14-16  with 12 minutes to run the Warriors never gave up in the face of the Sharks defensive intensity.  Two minutes from fulltime Sharks utility Michael Sullivan laid on his team's last try with a grubber for centre Nigel Vagana to score and close down a tough 22-14 win.

Warriors Evarn Tuimavave stood out on the charge forward with an awesome 11 hitups for 116 metres gained with Paleaaesina 15 hitups for 108 metres.  They were matched by the firepower of Sharks work horses Jason Stevens (179m), Danny Nutley (145m), and Chris Beattie (116m).  Beetham and Faumuina with 30 tackles each did a heap of donkey work as did Koopu and Vinnie Anderson with 30 tackles, 19 hitups and 146 metres yardage.

Both teams were guilty of crazy errors however the dismal goakicking of  Sione Faumuina and Tony Martin  underline the importance a sound goal kicker plays in a teams fortunes.  In addition the frustration of stupid handling errors when tries were begging sums up a match that was thrown away.  As it stands with 7 games to go the Warriors are no chance of making the 2004 playoffs.

PREVIEW    15 July
After a 5 game suspension Francis Meli, who recently re-signed with the Warriors, to 2006 brings some urgency, grunt and speed to the wing attack.  He should be itching like hell to get at the Rabbitohs.   In recent weeks the regular starters Justin Murphy and Henry Fa'afili who retains the other wing have stood out with their miserable performances.  Lacking in commitment and confidence neither have been able to turn a trick thats worth writing about.

Coach TK has retained the same forward pack that gave a solid showing against Cronulla but will shift utility Jerome Ropati to five-eighth with Lance Hohaia benching up. The good news is that Sione Faumuina, has signed an extended contract with the Warriors to 2007.  Recent formline reinforces the Rabbitohs favouritism after they smashed Penrith 30-6 last week.

MATCH REPORT
On a fine winters day in Auckland the Vodafone New Zealand  Warriors nailed a morale boosting 34-20 win over the Rabbitohs. The Warriors dished up a commanding first half performance hitting their rythmn with 5 tries to Henry Fa'afili, Brent Webb, Francis Meli, Louis Anderson and Jerome Ropati.  However they only managed one conversion to lead 22-4 at halftime.

In the second half the Rabbitohs kicked back with 3 tries to Shane Marteene (2) and Joe William in a 10-minute shakeup to trail 20-22 with 20 nervous minutes left to run.  The game was poised either way until the Warriors struck with 2 great tries under the posts to Brent Webb in the 79th and Wairangi Koopu right on fulltime to the thrill of their 7900 home fans.   Both tries were converted by Stacey Jones.

The home pack dominated early.  Villasanti, Paleaaesina, Guttenbeil, Louis & Vinnie Anderson carted up busy and did all the donkey stuff in defence along with Tuimavave and Koopu who both impacted off the bench.  Five of the seven tries were scored by the midfield and wing attack of Meli, Toopi, Webb, Faafili, Martin and Ropati.  In the tough weeks ahead the backs will need to find their rythmn and timing to fully utilize their strike potential.

Jerome Ropati had an awesome game as did Stacey Jones whose kicking game was one of the key factors that combined to make the expectation of a home win a reality, but only in the dying stages of the game was the execution delivered.  It was a dynamic team effort driven by belief and confidence in their ability to rise above their recent inconsistent form, at least for another week.  However on balance the joy is brief and needs to seen in the right perspective.

With time winding down the back end of the 2004 season the win has no bearing on the Premiership and didnt compare in urgency, intensity or skill, with Friday nights spectacle that saw the Roosters snatch an 18-14 from behind win over the Dragon's in front of 27,000 fans.  Nevertheless the battle to get off the bottom and stay off is just as intense and urgent as the fight for the top 4 placings between the Roosters, Dogs, Broncos and Panthers.

The most likely wooden spoon contenders the Warriors, Rabbitohs, Manly and whoever else gets shoved downwards are locked in a dire struggle. With the Raiders next week, followed with a bye the Warriors then face a daunting five game run home against the Broncos (home), St George (a), Eels (a), Roosters (h) and finally the Bulldogs home at Ericsson in the first September weekend.  For the Warriors the only certainty is the uncertainty.

Raiders snatch 30-29 win in extra time
Rd 20    Warriors 29 v  Canberra Raiders 30   Sunday  25 July    Canberra Stadium  Crowd 8535

Summary
Just as the All Blacks nailed a last minute try to down the Springboks 23-21 so did Canberra fullback Clinton Schifcofske slam home the winning field goal in extra time to snatch a 30-29 home win.  It was a tragic but the Vodafone New Zealand Warriors just have to bite the bullet and prepare for the Broncos next up.

Injuries to key strike players Toopi and Tony Martin  forced coach TK to shift Anderson and Faumuina to the centres. Although the Warriors may have deserved to win they failed to execute the big plays leading into the critical moments of desperation.  Trailing the Warriors 16-12 at halftime the error prone Raiders were anything but convincing but they had lady luck on their side.

The Warriors showed a lot of commitment to get the upper hand for the best part of a thrilling match but should have hammered the Raiders a lot earlier.   Leading 28-18 with 12 minutes left to play the Warriors had command of the game but allowed the Raiders to use their time in possession effectively and force their way back into extra time.

The dying stages produced 3 drop goals, Stacey Jones in the 77th minute to lead 29-28 followed by Schifcoske who tied it up 29-29 at fulltime.  Then after the Raiders had set up field position the decider was slotted 90 seconds into extra time by the Canberra fullback from 30 metres out to nail a 30-29 win.

Standout prop Iafeta Paleaaesina had a great game for the Warriors scoring a try and making the break that lead to Brent Webbs first try .  Stacey Jones, Hohaia and  Webb produced a smarter kicking game while Richard Villasanti and the Anderson brothers also had strong games for the Warriors.  Ruben Wiki, Matt Gafa, Michael Weyman  and Schifcofske were the Raiders' best players.

Next week the Warriors have a bye then its Bronco's time.

In an effort to purge the demons of the previous regime new coach Tony Kemp has added former Kiwi coach Graeme Norton as his assistant coach at the Warriors.  Former Kiwis Duane Mann, Tony Iro and Richard Blackmore have also been added to the coaching squad for the rest of the year.  Assistant coach at the Warriors under Daniel Anderson since 2001, TK previously coached at Wakefield Trinity '98 (player coach) and Leeds reserves '99-2000.

Kemp had an 11-year professional career playing with the Newcastle Knights and later the South Queensland Crushers in Australia and at Castleford, Leeds and Wakefield-Trinity in England before turning his hand to coaching.

...the Warriors have had a miserable time of it, unable to harness their winning rythmn they've lost 13 and won 6.  The suspensions of Seuseu 7 weeks, Meli 5 and Faumuina 4 from the Round 13 clash against Canberra on top of injuries were determining factors that seriously affected the teams capacity and spilled over into rounds 14 - 20  where they won just 2 of 7.  Dismal goalkicking was also a losing factor.

However Koopu, Paleaaesina, Villasanti, Stacey, Jerome, Webb, Louis, Vinnie, Lance, Karl, Thomas, Toopi, Guttenbeil, Lauaki and Tuimavave delivered consistent performances that indicated belief  in themselves and in the club.

The 2 home game wins were thrillers, by a 10 point margin against the Eels and by 14 over the Rabbitohs. They suffered 2 huge losses conceding 46 points in round 14 to Wests in Christchurch and 36 points in round 16 to the Storm in Melbourne.

The chips were down when the Warriors were forced into two golden point  deciders and choked on it each time; through the indiscipline of their captain against the Cowboys at home in round 15 and when they let Canberra off the hook in round 20.

The Warriors face the Broncos in Auckland on Saturday August 7, then St George (a), Parrammatta (a), the last two home at Ericsson Stadium Auckland against the Roosters then the Bullldogs.  The remaining rounds are the last spin off the dice, after busting through to the finals in 2001, making the grand final in 2002 and finishing 3rd in 2003 they are no chance for the 2004 playoffs.

Pride will be the motivation that will drive them to finish on a strong note.  Click on ARCHIVES 4 for match reports, previews, MVP's, teams and pics from the last 5 rounds of the 2004 NRL.
