| PREVIEW With just 5 matches left to redeem some pride the Warriors squad to face the Broncos has been strengthened with the return of Jerry Seuseu after 7 weeks suspension, captain Monty Beetham, Tony Martin and Clinton Toopi. After some big games prop Iafeta "the rhino" Paleaaesina holds his spot with Seuseu expected to impact off the bench. Rookie Louis Anderson retains the hooking spot after some solid performances while powerful defender Beetham packs down at lock. Stacey and Jerome spearhead the pivot combo with Tony Martin shifting to the wing attack vacated by Henry Faafili who is off to the UK Superleague on a 3 year contract with Warrington. Clinton Toopi centres up with Vinnie Anderson to add some sting to the Warriors midfield strike. Warriors: Brent Webb, Tony Martin, Vinnie Anderson, Clinton Toopi, Francis Meli, Jerome Ropati, Stacey Jones (c), Iafeta Paleaaesina, Louis Anderson, Richard Villasanti, Sione Faumuina, Awen Guttenbeil, Monty Beetham. Interchange : Jerry Seuseu, Karl Temata, Evarn Tuimavave, Wairangi Koopu, Epalahame Lauaki. (1 down) The second placed Broncos have named a formidable side that includes playmaker Darren Lockyer and NZ born fullback sensation Karmichael Hunt who is a frontrunner for the NRL rookie of the year. If Kangaroo international prop Shane Webcke returns from injury he will bloster a team who's consistency has them riding a 5 game winning streak for an average scoreline of about 27-16. That form alone guarantees favouritism. After some awesome clashes in recent years the Broncos along with the Bulldogs are one of the Warriors biggest drawcards in Auckland. Broncos Karmichael Hunt, Scott Minto, Brent Tate, Shaun Berrigan, Stuart Kelly, Darren Lockyer, Casey McGuire, Carl Webb, Neville Costigan, Petero Civoniceva, Gordon Tallis (c), Dane Carlaw, Tonie Carroll. Interchange Corey Parker, Brad Meyers, David Stagg, Darren Mapp, Paul Green Broncos sink the Warriors 21-14 NRL Rd 22 Warriors 14 v Brisbane Broncos 21 Saturday 7 August 7.30pm Ericsson Stadium Auckland Crowd 9710 MATCH REPORT "It was a tight match for us" said captain Gordon Tallis post match after the Broncos pulled out all the stops to sink the Warriors 21-14 and post their first win at Ericsson Stadium since 2000. The outcome hung in the balance until Shaun Berrigan scored in the 76th followed by a field goal by Casey McGuire in the last minute. Warriors Richard Villasanti, Paleaaesina, Beetham, Koopu and Louis Anderson lead the charge hard and fast up the middle forcing the Broncos pack to defend against the onslaught. Paleaaesina was in devastating form. The Warriors led 8-6 at halftime through a try to Villasanti and 2 goals to Stacey Jones. The Broncos points came off a smart try to Casey McGuire after they changed the point of attack to the left side and moved it wide where the Warriors midfield defence hesitated and were caught in disarray. In the second half the Warriors had the chance to press ahead but for some lax defence, basic errors, and a freaky incident where Paleaaesina was home for a try until Berrigan scrambled and punched the ball from his right arm. The Broncos second try in the 54th minute was a big play that put them up 12-8. Darren Lockyer added some intelligent touches of experience to the attack, reading the Warriors defensive line as he moved up to the markers and committed two defenders. The ball was flicked to Karmichael Hunt then to McGuire who flew down the sideline and kicked infield for Hunt to pounce on the ball in goal. How easy was that. Ten minutes later Casey McGuire followed up with another try to kick out to 16-8. As the rain pelted down Francis Meli scored with 12 minutes left to close the gap to 16-14 but the Broncos found a way to finish strong when Berrigan nailed his second try followed by a last minute drop goal by McGuire to clinch a 21-14 shutout. In cold and wet conditions the "lucked out" Warriors continued a losing saga underpinned by little things such as ifs, buts and maybe's. It was a game they forfeited and increased the debt they owe to themselves. The positive upside was the pride and determination the Warriors displayed against a Wayne Bennet coached team that understood the value of patience. Warriors coach Tony Kemp was proud of his team's enormous effort and outstanding defence. When the big plays counted Berrigan and five-eighth Darren Lockyer Lockyer had worked out how the Warriors defence sat back, drifted and moved up slow. Bronco's captain Tallis linked up well while Dane Carlaw, Civoniceva, Parker and Carl Webb who is off to the Cowboys next year never took a step backwards in the face of the Warriors big guns. Berrigan and McGuire were very dangerous while Karmichael Hunt continued his impressive form Brisbane Broncos 21 S Berrigan 2, K Hunt, C McGuire tries; D Lockyer 2 goals; McGuire field goal Vodafone NZ Warriors 14 F Meli, R Villasanti tries; S Jones 3 goals. | PREVIEW 12 August The Warriors have stuck with the squad that put in a great effort against the Bronco's for this weeks clash with the Dragons. With an average 28 tackles a match this year hard working second row forward Wairangi Koopu starts ahead of regular Awen Guttenbeil. Lance Hohaia benches up with Epalahame Lauaki , Karl Temata, Guttenbeil and Evarn Tuimavave. Watch Paleaaesina and Villa. Star playmaker Stacey Jones is close to becoming the first Warrior to score 500 NRL points. He sits on on 495 after kicking nine out of 10 attempts since taking over the goalkicking duties for the last three matches. The Dragons have hung tough all year having defeated the Melbourne Storm 34-14 last week at home. Prior to that they lost 10-34 to the Cowboys, beat the Sharks 26-14 (h), lost to the Roosters 26-14 and lost to the Broncos 14-28. The fifth placed Dragons will definitely stiffen up in their run home where they face the Knights, Manly and a bye. Like Darren Lockyer, the Matthew Head and Trent Barrett combo will be looking to switch the attack away from the middle and exploit the slow marker defence wide where the Warriors five eigth and centres were caught out last week. Centres Carlaw and Cooper as well as the front row of Ryles, Kite and Riddell will pose a lot of dangers for the Warriors. Dragons shakedown the Warriors 28-10 Rd 23 Warriors 10 v St George -Illawarra Dragons 28 Sat 14 August Win Stadium Wollongong Crowd 12,503 SUMMARY Running up 6 tries to 2 the St George-Illawarra Dragons gave the Warriors a 28-10 shakedown. Leading 8-6 the turning point was 5 minutes before the break when the Dragons laid on 2 tries to Reece Simmons and Ben Hornsby, to lead 18-6 at halftime. The Dragons had 56% possession and completed 34 of 41sets. There was not a lot of quality in the visitors ball handling. Petty turnovers and 19 errors overall with only 28 completed sets of 36 highlighted the Warriors limited time in possession. Consequently the visitors were forced to defend for most of the second half racking up a mammoth 325 tackles overall with 53 mistackles. In a game of split second decisions the stats indicate the cold hard facts; technical strengths and weaknesses to explain how and why a talented team fell apart under pressure when they came head to head with an equally talented team that had the stronger will and desire to win. The Dragons attacking line was up fast around the rucks with decoy runners creating havoc on the marker defence. Their forward pack laid down the winning platform through prop Jason Ryles with 197 metres gained, 17 tackles and 20 hitups Brent Kite, Riddell, Timmins and a rampaging Dean Young. The Dragons gained the upper hand in the second half when they hammered the Warriors with 2 tries, Nick Youngquest (50m) then backrower Ashton Sims (73rd) after a sweeping play led by Ryles. Francis Meli touched down in the 68th minute for the Warriors who appeared dangerous when mounting attacks on St Georges line but lacked variety and versatility in their kicking options. The Warriors had their chances but they blew it.. Prop Jason Ryles pointed to their effectiveness in shutting down the Warriors main playmaker Stacey Jones as the key to St George's victory. "It was definitely something we worked on during the week and something we got through good." If the coach had anticipated and prepared thoroughly they would have employed some strategic game plan or alternative options with decoy runners to cover the first receiver playmaker. On attack the Warriors ability to take command of the situation was hampered by their lack of structure and organization. There seemed to be uncertainty and a lack of trust between the players. On the upside Villasanti, Louis Anderson, Koopu, Faumuina and Beetham stood out in the donkey work department. Unknown 2 years ago Brent Webb, who has pledged his availability for Kiwi selection, stood out as the Warriors MVP as did Stacey and Vinnie. Penrith thrashed a lame Manly team by a record 60 points and the Tigers in 8th spot thumped the Rabbitohs by 50 points to lift the Warriors to third from the bottom. The Warriors gained a lot of self respect by holding out the Bronco's 21-14. With a pack that can unsettle opponents when they muscle up the Warriors showed they are a wildcard shot to escape the wooden spoon red zone. A knee injury has forced prop Jerry Seuseu out for 2-3 weeks while Stacey Jones has landed 9 of 10 since taking the goal kicks in the last 3 matches. The Roosters, who are away to the Warriors in 3 weeks were caught out 26-12 by a smart Cronulla side that never relinquinshed the lead once in front. | PREVIEW 18 August
Its "wooden spoon time" and the last chance for the Warriors to gain any credibility. After they're done with the Eels the Warriors face the NRL frontrunners the Sydney Roosters and the Bulldogs who are both virtually injury-free and firing on all cylinders. The Dogs are hitting their doggie rythmn and are the hotshots for the Minor Premiers and the Premiership. Parrammatta start this match as favourites after steamrolling the Sharks last week 44-22, their prior form was; bye L L L W. Their key dangers will be Luke Burt, the smart halves pairing of Witt and Thorman, determined winger Matt Peterson, Daniel Wagon and star forward Nathan Hindmarsh. The Warriors recent formline is L L bye L W, the players to watch are Paleaaesina, Villa, Louis, Wairangi and the halves Stacey and Jerome with Brent Webb a lurking danger. Five weeks ago the Warriors at home downed the Eels 20-10. If the Warriors improve on their last two close losses to the Broncos and the Dragons they'll stand a 50/50 chance against the Eels who are just a little flasher than the Warriors. The critical areas for improvement are defence, concentration, ball retention, a smarter kicking game and first receiver cover for their playmaker. Its now or never, the wooden spoon awaits. The bottom placed Rabbitohs meet Manly this week, the Broncos then the Raiders. Late Mail 21/8 Stacey Jones (strained leg muscle) and Jerome Ropati (arm injury) have both pulled out of the team for tonites clash against the Eels. They have been replaced by the Thomas Leuluai - Lance Hohaia combo. Eels outplay the Warriors 48-18 Rd 24 Warriors 18 v Parrammatta Eels 48 Saturday 21 August Parrammatta Stadium, Parrammatta Crowd 7271 In front of 7000 vocal supporters the Parrammatta Eels outplayed the Vodafone New Zealand Warriors to score a crushing 48-18 win. The halves Michael Witt and Chris Thorman combined intelligently to cut the big plays. Witt in particular stood out with 24 valuable points from two tries and eight goals. Leading 22 -6 at halftime the Eels dominated almost every phase of play to deliver the Warriors fourth straight loss, their longest losing streak this year. In the 62nd minute Eels MVP Witt zipped round the edge of the scrum past some ragged Warriors forwards to score by the posts. Minutes later hooker Lee Hopkins (68th) grabbed a try. As the defence tired the Eels delivered a one two knockout punch through late tries to James Webster (74th) and Justin Tsoulos (78th). There's a chance that the Eels 8 tries to 3 shutout could count them into a playoff spot. Coach Brian Smith stated prematch that he never underestimated the Warriors size, talent and ability. Although the desire to win was evident in some individual performances the Warriors lacked mental cohesion as a team and eventually lost their focus as their discipline and game plan deteriorated. The Warriors 18 points came from a first half try to Tony Martin (21st) who swooped on a loose ball to score under the posts. In the second half Lance Hohaia put a sharp step on the defence to score. Richard Villasanti's knack for being in the right place, right time showed in the 70th minute when he positioned himself to regather a high kick from Brent Webb and score. Faumuina sealed 3 out of 3 conversions. Brent Webb had a sound game and looked dangerous on attack while Louis and Vinnie Anderson, Tony Martin, Villasanti and Beetham also played with a determined purpose. Clever scrumhalf Lance Hohaia continually probed the Eels line with a smart mix of short, long and high kicks to keep the team's limited chances alive. The Warriors inability to finish off some attacking chances when in sight of the try line was effectively hampered as much by the Eels bustling defence as their own terrible ball control, unforced errors and turnovers. Possession was surrendered far too easily allowing the Eels to run in 26 second half points through missed and incomplete tackles. It was an embarrassment that led to frustration and indiscipline as they struggled chasing shadows till the final whistle. A special talent during his years at Glenoras Bartercard Cup team, former coach Daniel Anderson pegged him in the 2002 national under-18 competition noting his strengths "his flair, offload and evasion, he's a strong tackler with a knack for scoring tries".
Big and strong at 187cm and 107 kg's Lauaki is on a full contract with the Vodafone Warriors to 2006 His 2004 form has been impressive given the rivalry of experienced players Wairangi Koopu, Monty Beetham, Karl Temata and Awen Guttenbeil. He was the stand out MVP against Manly in round 10 scoring 2 tries. With some polish in attack, tackling technique and finishing ability from his coach he will look a good thing for the Warriors in upcoming years. |

At home the Penrith Panthers reversed last weeks 12-44 loss to the Roosters with a stunning 56-6 win over the Cowboys posting 38 unanswered points in the second half. In Melbourne the Storm blew the odds apart by snapping the Bulldogs 10 game winning streak with a solid 22-12 upset. | Vodafone will continue as the Warriors major sponsor for three more years
. The companys support for the Warriors is built around the message of faith and we wanted to demonstrate that our faith in the team is strong, said Lynley Kirk-Smith,
Vodafones general manager of company communications and sponsorship. They may not have had a great season this year but were sticking with them through thick and thin.
"We decided to bring our announcement forward in order to give the team some encouragement and certainty going forward, she said. The new deal means Vodafone will continue as the Warriors key sponsor until at least November 2007. Vodafone has been the naming rights sponsor of the team for the past six years and it had been a very successful partnership, said Kirk-Smith. Whether theyre experiencing the winning seasons of 2002 and 2003 or this years bad patch, the Vodafone Warriors are always exciting to watch. Thats why they have such a dedicated fan base who are with them all the way. Like those loyal followers, Vodafone believes in living the faith so were giving the team our unconditional support. Kirk-Smith said the sponsorship of the Warriors had been a rewarding association which had benefited both parties, as well as the fans. |

| Roosters deny the Warriors 30-24 NRL Rd 25 Warriors 24 v Sydney Roosters 30 2pm Sunday 29 August Ericsson Stadium Auckland Crowd: 8019. But for a few critical errors the Warriors could have upset the Sydney Roosters who held on for a lucky 30-24 win. The home team cleaned up their discipline and turned up on a warm Sunday afternoon to play with pride and a real desire to win. Their mental attitude showed when they posted 2 early tries, the first to Awen Guttenbeil (6m) who pounced on a Stacey short kick in goal. Then rookie fullback Jerome Ropati laid up a big pass for Wairangi Koopu who hit the gap then found Karl Te Mata (16m) who carried 10 metres to score the second try. Up 12-0 after 17 minutes the vibe from the Auckland crowd was buoyant. In the 21st minute Roosters rookie forward Anthony Tupou made his mark on the game with a big play. Off a quick pass from Finch, Tupou jinked pass Tony Martin then hit the gas 20 metres to score an awesome individual try near the posts. Eight minutes later Craig Wing made it 12-12 when he scored after backing up Fittler who stepped through sloppy defence. Chris Walker added a penalty goal to put the Roosters up 14-12 at halftime. Ropati laid up 3 nice touches in the first half that led to 1 big scoring play instead of 3. The first pass to Koopu was a touch forward, the second to Koopu onto Te Mata resulted in a try. The third was dropped by centre Tony Martin who, with a try begging, saw the line before he saw the pass.. In the second half Crocker (49m), Wing and Morley (74) scored for the Bondi boys. Each time the Warriors struck back. Wing's second try came after he hit down the right side and stepped round some mediocre defence on the edges. Roosters main man Brad Fittler stamped his authority on the attack breaking the line then offloading to Crocker who found Morley backing up to score. The Warriors hit back in the 57th when rookie winger Cooper Vuna (57m) scored off a smart grubber kick from Lance Hohaia. Ropati (77m) kept the fire burning when he took a pass off Faumuina to score but at 30-24 the final whistle came too soon. Unlike previous weeks the home team showed a lot of spirit and really rattled the Roosters who like the Broncos 3 weeks earlier did just enough to bring home the bacon when the Warriors could have nailed them. The mental thing was the difference. Stacey Jones had a great game achieving a club milestone as the only Warrior to post 500 points. Ropati displayed all round confidence while Koopu proved effective hitting the line 2 or 3 wide. Unlike his lack lustre efforts in recent weeks Guttenbeil put a big clean hit on Catic in the second half to lift his team's game. In his second to last match before retirement Brad Fittler stated post match of the Warriors "they have good support, its a beautiful country and I enjoy coming here" Sydney Roosters 30: Anthony Tupou, Craig Wing (2), Michael Crocker, Adrian Morley tries; Chris Walker 1 pen, 4 con Vodafone New Zealand Warriors 24: Awen Guttenbeil, Karl Te Mata, Cooper Vuna, Jerome Ropati tries; Stacey Jones 4 con Halftime : Roosters 14-12 |

PREVIEW 24 August Warriors coach Tony Kemp has made a number of changes to the squad to meet the NRL leaders the Sydney Roosters. | The Bulldogs blitzed the Newcastle Knights 52-6. Up 34-0 at halftime the Dogs shut them out completely, Mark O'Meley got 2, Andrew Ryan 2; Utai, Anasta, Grimaldi and Maitua all scored with dead eye Hazem El Masri kicking 10/10. In Auckland next week the Dogs can expect a more resolute effort from the Warriors who but for a few errors (their story of 2004) came close to upsetting the Roosters who held on for a lucky 30-24 away win. Last round to decide the MINOR PREMIERS --the Roosters & Bulldogs top 40 points each. If Roosters win Dogs lose, Roosters get the MP. If Dogs win Roosters lose , Dogs get the MP. With a commanding differential Roosters +304, to the Dogs +225, if both lose the Roosters get the Minor Premiers.
Down 24-4 at halftime and 34-10 with 23 minutes left, St George Illawarra turned the tables on Manly. The Dragons kicked back with 5 unanswered tries to Blacklock 2, Hornby, Matt Cooper and Justin Poore converted by Riddell to snatch a dramatic 36-34 win. In a fiery affair that saw 3 sinbins the Sharks indiscipline cost them a 36-28 loss to the Storm. The bottom placed Rabbitohs played with a lot of spirit to hold the Broncos to a 34-34 draw after extra time. Up 18-8 at HT the Broncos failure to put Souths away raises doubts about their premiership claims. Up 18-14 @ halftime Penrith held off a determined challenge from the Parrammatta Eels to get the money 30-20. The Cowboys away booked their first ever NRL playoff spot by sinking Wests Tigers 24-12. The Cowboys' resolute defence denied the Tigers any chance. THE WOODEN SPOON last round ... If Souths Sydney Rabbitohs beat Canberra Raiders & the Warriors lose, the Warriors get the spoon. If the Warriors win & Souths lose, Souths get the spoon. With a greater differential, -317 compared to the Warriors -222, the difference will count against Souths if both teams lose this week. Since entering the NRL in 1995 the Warriors have never had the wooden spoon. |

PREVIEW September 2 This week Brent Webb starts at standoff with Jerome Ropati at fullback after an impressive display there last week. Toopi comes back to centre up with Faumuina while Richard Villasanti's return forces Karl Te Mata to the interchange. Reserves will be drawn from Vinnie, Lauaki, Tuimavave, Hohaia and Jerry Seuseu who if fit may have his last hit before departing to Wigan. Against the Roosters last week they posted an uplifting performance and if they can improve a few areas they may surprise the Dogs. If Souths beat the Raiders & the Warriors lose, the Warriors get the spoon. If the Warriors win & Souths lose, Souths get the spoon. With a greater differential, -317 compared to the Warriors -222, the difference will count against Souths if both teams lose this week. Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has named the same team that ripped the Knights apart 52-6 last week for this Sunday's clash with the Warriors. With the Minor Premiership at stake all eyes will be on the Bulldogs captain Steve Price who joins the Warrior next year, Willy Mason, Utai, Tonga and mean O'Meley. Star centre Sonny Bill Williams will also prove a big drawcard in a team that has class, speed and power all over the field. Watch the key playmakers Sherwin & Anasta. Bulldogs tuneup 54-10 Rd 26 Warriors 10 v Canterbury Bulldogs 54 Sunday 5 September Ericsson Stadium Auckland Crowd 9930 Match Summary Down 28-6 at halftime this match seemed like it had been lost mentally long before kickoff infront of 10,000 fans at Ericsson Stadium. After the Raiders delivered the wooden spoon to the South Sydney Rabbitohs by thumping them 62-22 last night their was no team desire, no aspiration or purpose to the Warriors dismal performance. Sadly thats the way it panned out as the Bulldogs took them to pieces 54-10. Effectively the Warriors misery served as a fine tuning exercise for the Dogs muscle machine in preparation for the next week's playoffs against the North Queensland Cowboys. With 4 of his teams 10 tries, Matt Utai's awesome finishing ability contributed to the Dogs premiership claims and advanced his prospects for Kiwi selection. Likewise with Kiwi prospect Sonny Bill who was in smashing form along with teamates, Andrew Ryan, big Willy Mason, Mark O'Meley and captain Steve Price. The Dogs steamroling pack set the platform for the midfield strikepower of Willy Tonga, Harris, Mazri, Patten and Utai who combined to dominate their opposites. This team had class, speed and power all over the field. Only a handful of Warriors deserve a mention with 19 year old rookie Louis Anderson standing out alongside Jerome Ropati and Brent Webb. The Dogs sent out a powerful warning to their semifinal opponents with an eye on the favourites the Sydney Roosters who claimed the 2004 Minor Premiership by downing the Eels 48-10. Captain Steve Price expressed a balanced focus on the Bulldogs challenge for the premiership title stating, "We've probably had a better build-up to the semifinals than we've ever had so we've got more chances to win it. It's my last time I'm going to have that opportunity at the Bulldogs so I'm really looking forward to the chance to play as well as I can to get that goal, and do that lap of honour on the third of September." At halftime the Storm trailed the Broncos 8-0 after a dominant performance by Brisbane's forward pack who made the Storm look dreadful as they struggled to settle into their natural game. | This was one exciting mutha of a game. The North Queensland Cowboys historic 10-0 upset win over the Broncos proved they could deliver an overwhelming expectation of their fans. To conquer the Broncos for the first at home in front of a sellout 25,000 crowd also proved they are worthy contenders. The Cowboys huge forward pack muscled the Broncos in attack and defence in a game that didnt let up. Kiwi prop Paul Rauhihi put in a solid match alongside his go forward mates Tronc, O'Donnell, McWilliams and Norton. It was a tight fast breaking spectacle full of nail biting intensity that swung from end to end. Right up to the final whistle the Bronco's led by Lockyer, Berrigan, Webcke and Civoniceva always believed they were a chance often risking desperate plays to overcome the Cowboys who were up for everything the visitors threw at them.
With overwhelming home support the Cowboys exhausted the Broncos in a game of attrition that produced just one try to former Warrior David Myles for the Cowboys to lead 8-0 at halftime. It was a classic underdog victory with every Cowboy lifting their game way above anything they've done all year. Cowboys halfback Nathan Fien who joins the Warriors in 2005 had an awesome all round game directing the kicks and setting up his outside supports while centre Hannay kicked 3 goals. With just one game away from the Grand Final the Cowboys come face to face with reality when they meet the Minor Premiers the Sydney Roosters at Telstra Stadium Sydney on Sunday. |

| On Sunday the Canterbury Bulldogs outgunned the Melbourne Storm 43-18 in a match that lacked the sheer excitement delivered to league fans by the Cowboys. Nevertheless it was a hard fought match with the Dogs dominating and serving up some excellent scoring plays. Thurston 2, Perry, Ryan, Masri, Tonga, Patten, Sherwin all touched down for the Dogs with Masri landing 7 goals and Sherwin a field goal. The Dogs defence restricted the bumbling efforts of the Melbourne Storm who played in patches counterpunching with 3 tries (Bell 2, Slater1) when they werent making costly unforced errors and mistackles. Perhaps they fired their best shot last week but the Storm were outgunned, outplayed and eliminated from the finals. Next week the Dogs clash with the Penrith Panthers in the Saturday final.
Despite losing, top efforts from Broncos NZ born winger Gary Tupou and Storm forwards David Kidwell and Alex Chan earned them a call up to the Kiwis train on squad. Marcus Perenara from the Bartercard has also been added. |

Sonny Bill Williams made some huge shoulder slams, one hit stopping Joel Clinton full on in his tracks. In the face of the Dogs onslaught backed up with an accurate kicking game from halves Sherwin and Anasta the Penrith pack spent a lot of time defending and absorbing some punishing attacking blows. The second grand final qualifier saw the Sydney Roosters book a grand final date with the Bulldogs after they prevailed 19-16 over the North Queensland Cowboys. It wasnt a walkover. The Cowboys defence was pumped up for a torrid battle with Rauhihi, ODonnell, Tronc, McWillliams, Southern, Norton leading the way in a thrilling match. Cross and Fittler scored for the Roosters with Fitzgibbon landing 5 of 5 goals. Cowboys Paul Bowman sored in the first 20 minutes off a bomb from Nathan Fien while winger Ty Williams scored twice. It was a determined effort from the Cowboys who played with a lot of self belief and really had the Roosters rattled. Fullback Matt Bowen was always in the hunt and stood out with Hannay, Myles and Fien. Up 10-6 at halftime the pre match favourite Roosters did just enough to nose out the Cowboys who posed a danger for the full 80. | 3 October Telstra Stadium Sydney Sunday 3 October Canterbury Bulldogs 16 v Sydney Roosters 13 It was an awesome grand final victory to the Bullldogs who held out the Roosters 16-13. The Bulldogs' Willy Mason had a massive game punching huge holes in the Roosters defence Mason won the Clive Churchill medal. Both teams turned in a stunning performance in front of a capacity crowd of 82,000. Steady rain before kick-off made the ball slippery. Dropped ball was inevitable. The first 10 minutes were marred by a series of handling errors that cost both sides a number of scoring opportunities. The Roosters completed 23 of 43 sets and because much of the dropped ball occurred early in the tackle count, they robbed themselves of 77 plays. The Roosters erred by moving the ball quickly to the flanks in the opening minutes in an effort to avoid a dogfight they could not win In his last match Brad Fittler lifted his game and sparked his side with a cross-field kick's that turned the Bulldogs' defence. From that play winger Chris Walker scooted through for the opening try in the 14th minute. Eight minutes Kiwi Matt Utai scored in the corner for the Bulldogs. El Masri leveled the scores to 6-6. The brilliance of Rooster Anthony Tupou came out when he busted the tackle of Corey Hughes then ripped through the line and set up fullback Anthony Minichiello with a straight 40 metre burst to post a handy 13-6 halftime lead to the Rossters. Four minutes into the second half Utai stormed over 2 Roosters for his second try. Then El Masri scored in the 52nd leaving both teams slamming each other to the final whistle. 19 year old Sonny Bill Williams had a massive mistake free grand final. The Dogs had a 90 per cent completion rate in the second half, when they surged back. The Dogs made 236 tackles to the Roosters 315 and won the penalty count 7-4. Three of the penalties the Roosters conceded were by one player Justin Hodges, who was completely outplayed by his opposite Willy Tonga. Walker made six tackles and missed five; Hodges missed two. |
