POETRY MAGAZINES

The Poetry Society is a central resource for UK poets and can supply (as published in the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook) a comprehensive list of poetry magazines. The Poetry Society also offers workshops and a subscription to their own prestigious magazine.

Poetry Magazines - Envoi, Orbis, Anon and MsLexia - are positive to submissions from new writers, frequently offering useful feedback on work. It is useful to take out a subscription with any poetry magazine before submitting, to become familiar with their style. Small magazines invariably depend on subscriptions to survive.

Poetry competitions are advertised regularly in the magazines. The style of work produced by the adjudicator can be a useful guide as to how your work will be received.

TIPS ON SUBMITTING POETRY

Perseverance pays dividends in trying to get your poetry into print.

To give yourself the best chance, follow the pointers in Writers and Artists Yearbook. Unless a magazine editor specifies differently it is common practice to

  • send 5-6 poems typed double-spaced, each on its a separate sheet
  • with your name and address on each sheet (unless magazine requires anonymity)
  • plus a SAE with the correct postage.

  • Do not expect a swift reply (it can take months) or much in the way of payment (beyond a free copy) especially in the early years.

    POETRY PERFORMANCE

Slam! Poetry is another way to get your poetry heard, where poets compete by standing up and delivering a stanza in their allotted few minutes and a voting panel decides whether the performance makes it to the next round.

Performance poetry often goes down well at Arts Festivals.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world's biggest Art festival. Visual Artists frequently rent window space and display work at the largest gathering of art critics. Performance poetry continues to increase its niche size and Slam Productions hold regular open mic events in the South of England.

    ON LINE PUBLISHING

On line poetry magazines offer an instant way of getting work into print.

Upload your work to the established abctales for an instant web presence.

Creating your own website to display your work
gives you more control over how it is presented,

  • yahoo provides free webspace if you can cope with some advertising.

  • Html goodies is a website that will teach you the basics of how to write in the computer language html.

  • Register your website with search engines on submit it.
  • FOCUS ON YOUR RESOURCES

Use your regional provenance to target magazines specific to that area

  • Raw Edge (West Midlands)
  • Northwords (Scotland)
  • Poetry Wales

  • Consider magazines specific to your lifestyle, such as publications relating to your hobbies, profession, community or university.

But whatever you do it, do it today! Good luck.
