Magical Theatre

The doorbell is ringing
The postman is faster than
the sound of the bell
Wrapped in an angel’s gown
he brings
one page of
the New Testament
each day
Above the leaf
I create the theatre
with an empty stage
(there is nothing but air)
and I play the air
I enter the wombs
of the audience
I predict their dreams
two hours in advance
99 per cent of the people
stick on wings
and as they open their eyes
they reach for a glass of water
and a spoon of sugar.
