GENERAL

ACCIDENT PREVENTION (401/ACP)

1. Know the provisions of the Highway Code applicable to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

2. Know the signals given by the police, drivers and cyclists.

3. Know the sequence of the traffic lights, road signs and the braking distances

of a motor vehicle.

4. Know how to maintain and make simple adjustments to any one machine which the candidate may use, e.g. bicycle, lawn mover, sewing machine, etc.

5. Know the procedure to be adopted when encountering an accident.

6. Know the location of the nearest hospital, doctor, fire station and police station/ police post from school and home.

7. Know the main causes of accidents in the home and the precautions to take to avoid them with particular reference to young children, the elderly, expectant mothers, the sick, and the handicapped; in relation to:

a) Electrical equipment

b) Fires, stoves, washing machines, inflammable materials

c) Gas appliances

d) Scalds and burns

e) Drugs and poisons

f) Sharp objects

g) Falls, including the danger of polished floors and wet vinyl floor coverings

h) Seasonal hazards, e.g. floods, wet leaves, campfires, etc.

8. Know the functions of the National Safety Council of Singapore.

CLERICAL ABILITY (402/CLA)

1 Write and type a simple letter on a Divisional matter.

2 Be able to give and receive messages accurately.

3 Be able to summarise in note form information given verbally.

4 Be able to use the telephone correctly including the use of dialing codes.

5 Be able to make a pager call.

6 Be able to check lists and complete forms (including Brigade forms) correctly.

7 Know simple filing systems and methods of keeping records.

8 Know the postal and banking facilities.

9 Know the various ways of paying for goods.

10 Be able to do a simple Income and Expenditure account.

11 Know the common committee structure and functions of the various office bearers.

12 Know how to prepare the notice, agenda and minutes of a meeting.



COOKERY AND NUTRITION (403/CKN)

1 Plan, cost, prepare and serve the three main meals for a family of four.

2 Lay a table and tray correctly and attractively.

3 Clear away and wash up.

4 Plan and roughly cost menus for a family of four for one week, including preparing a food and grocery list for this purpose.

5 Know the principles of cleanliness relating to cooking utensils, equipment and the kitchen.

6 Know what type of food are necessary to keep the body in good condition a) know the effects on the body of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins b) know the types of food in which these are found.

7 Know how to use frozen foods for convenience and economy.

8 Know the simple rules for shopping, e.g. the names of meat joints and how to cook them (roast, grilled, stewed, etc); how to tell when meat and fish are fresh.

9 Have a general knowledge of the methods of storing and preserving food in the home, including storage where no refrigerator is available.

10 Know what special points should be noted in preparing meals for invalids and convalescents.

11 Know the food and grocery used and the methods of preparing the following:

a) a soup
b) a main meat dish

c) a vegetable dish

(Practical tests will be conducted will applicable.)




DRILL INSTRUCTOR (404/DRI)

1. Know the commands of drill movements, including Ceremonial Parades and Procedures.

2. Know how to give proper commands in correct sequence including when to pause.

3. Demonstrate ability to command and control a drill beam, including maneuvering past obstacles.

4. Demonstrate ability to instruct a group of recruits/members on drill movements, including the preparation of a lesson plan and the execution of it.

FIRE FIGHTING AND PREVENTION (405/FFP)

1. Basic knowledge of fire science.

2. Basic knowledge of fire-fighting equipment.

3. Knowledge of basic rescue methods.

4. Knowledge of common causes of fire and how to prevent them.
5. Knowledge of basic fire prevention in the home.

(a) Good housekeeping
(b) Heating and cooking hazards

(c) Electrical appliances

6. Method of escaping from burning building, smoke or gas-filled premises.
7. Attend a visit to the Fire Station.

HANDYMAN (406/HDM)

1 Know how to convert from imperial to metric measurement and to use a measuring rule and demonstrate it at the examination.

2 Know the different types of tools, nails, screws, tap-washers, nuts and bells, etc and wall-plugs. Know where, why and how to use them. Be able to explain during the examination.

3 Know how to plug a wall using a 'Rawiplug' (wall-plug).

4 Be able to use the tools required for simple woodwork and small household jobs, like fit a pair hinges to a cupboard door and hang the door; fasten with a magnetic catch; hang cupboard to a brick and plaster wall using plugs.

5 Be able to replace tap-washers.

6 Know the difference between 'powers and 'lighting' circuits and the importance of switching off the mains supply when carrying out work on the electrical installation. Know how to change or repair a mains fuse.

7 Know the colour coding for a 3-core wiring system and at the examination wire a 13 amp plug.

8 Know the different types of switches used in a house and how to replace them.

9 Be able to use a soldering iron to solder a leak and know how to use do-ityourself bonding materials for similar purposes.

10 Know how to clean a blocked 'U' pipe under a sink and how to replace and properly seal screw plug at the base of the pipe.

11 Be able to replace a fluorescent tube and an incandescent lamp.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP (407/lNF)

1. Have a regular pen-friend in the country of their choice and have corresponded with him or her for at least six months and written at least six letters.

2. Know in broad outline the history and development of the country concerned.

3. Have a general knowledge of:

(a) The geography, natural resources and main industries of the country.

(b) The form of government, customs and way of life of the people.

4. Produce a scrap book or album showing by photographs, cut-outs, pressed flowers, drawings, etc. something of their pen-pal's country.

5. Write an essay of 1,500 - 2,000 words on some aspect of the country concerned, the subject to be chosen by the candidate and approved by the Instructor.

6. Produce a scrap-book or album showing by photographs, cut-outs, pressed flowers, drawings, etc. something of their surroundings in Singapore. The book should be shown to the Examiner before being sent to the pen-friend.

Note:

If the pen-friend is a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade in one of the overseas countries, the correspondent should include descriptions of local St John Ambulance Brigade events and activities.



KNOWLEDGE OFTHE ORDER OF ST JOHN (408/KSU)

It is stressed that the title of this subject is 'knowledge' and not 'History' of the Order. (Too much attention to dates, names and other details is not required.)

1. The events leading up to the formation of the Order.

2. The original purpose and the aims of the Order.

3. The main events, names and appropriate dates leading up to the fall of Malta.

4. The development of the Order and its Foundation to the present day.

5. The significance of the Great Officers of the Order.

6. The development of the St John Ambulance Council, Association and Brigade in Singapore.

7. The Organisation set-up of the St John Ambulance Brigade in Singapore, including the Unit Code System.

8. The main office-bearers of the St John Council and Brigade, including their own Corps And Zone.

9. The Objectives of the St John Ambulance Brigade and the Cadet Corps.

10. The Cadet Code of Chivalry.

LANGUAGES (409/LAN)

1 Be able to write notes in the chosen foreign language giving a description of a physical ailment, stating what treatment has been given and asking the doctor's advice, or that he should come to see the case.

2 Be able to talk in the foreign language to a casualty suffering from shock and show ability to translate very scruple questions and answers from the doctor to casualty.

3 Be able to answer in the chosen foreign language questions on a book the candidate has read in that language:

(a) orally

(b) in writing

4 Be able to talk in their mother tongue or their educational medium, for five minutes on the country of the foreign language chosen, its people, social habits, climate, currency, etc.

5 Be able to give, in the chosen foreign language, local information that may be helpful to a stranger visiting the candidate's own country or estate; e.g. information regarding hotels, transport, hospitals, doctors, fire service, police, places of interest, etc.

MOTORIST (410/MTR)

(It is not necessary for a candidate to possess a valid driving license to take this subject as no practical driving is required.)

1. Pass the Final Theory of Driving tests conducted by the Traffic Police department. Candidates are required to produce the necessary documents to show proof within a year of passing the test.

2. Know the statutory requirements regarding vehicle insurance, seat belt, traffic indicators, timing for switching on head lamps and the Central Business District (CBD) restriction hours.

3. Know how to change a wheel, a fuse, air filter and spark plugs.

4. Know the procedures for drying out the brakes after driving through deep water.

5. Know what errors should be avoided in order to attain a perfect trip whilst driving on the road.

6. Know the 6 adverse conditions in causing a traffic accident.

7. Know the cause of action to be taken in order to provide a total traffic accident strategy.

8. Name at least 5 organizations in Singapore involved with the working of Road Safety.

PET CARE (411/PTC)
1 Know how to take care of their own pet - covering general care, diet, health and cleanliness.

2 Know how they should be housed.

3 Know when to give food and water.

4 Know whether they need exercise or not.

5 Know the name of the nearest veterinary surgery.

6 Know the telephone number of the SPCA.

7 Know what to do if they see an injured stray animal.

8 Know what to do if they see cruelty to an animal.

9 Know when they are sick - apart from the usual symptoms - skin, ticks, maggots, wounds, etc.

10 Participated in 12 hours of voluntary work with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).


MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT (412/MMS)
1. To be able to demonstrate the utility of the MMS programme.

2. Provide Information sustaining the user of the programme

3. To maintain the application of the software.

4. To complete the MMS course conducted by the NHQ.
