ADVENTURE TRAINING COURSE (201/ADT)
Attend and successfully complete the 5-day residential Adventure Training

Course organised by the Outward Bound School, Singapore.

ATHLETICS (202/ALT)

1 Know the correct warming up and cooling down procedures.

2 Know the necessary techniques for each event that they qualify for.

3 Candidates may qualify by attaining the minimum standards shown below in at least two 'field' end two 'track' events.

The standard to be achieved in any single event will be that shown for the candidate's age at the time of taking the test in that particular event. Tests in all events need not be taken at the same time but must be at the same age.


CAMPING AND CAMPCRAFT (203/CCC)

1. Know what to look for in the choice of a camp site and produce a sketch of a simple layout.

2. Be able to pitch and strike a'basha' (make-shift shelter) and any other modern frame tent.

3. Know the general care for all types of tents.

4. Know the special precautions necessary in wet or windy weather,

5. Know the main causes of fire in camps and the special precautions needed to guard against them.

6. Be able to cook outdoor.

7. Know the principles of storing food and ensuring pure water.

8. Know the camp health rules and understand the special need for cleanliness and sanitation in the camp.

9. Be able to erect screening.

10. Be able to make at least 2 camp gadgets.

11. Know what personal equipment and kit should be taken to camp.

12. Spend at least 7 days in recognised camp(s), of which 3 days must be under canvas,

(Practical tests will be given in the appropriate items above.)



CANOEING (204/CNE)

Attend and successfully complete the Novice Canoeing Course organised by any of the following organizations: People's Association Adventure Club, Punggol Point Canoe Club, Sembawang Canoe Club, People's Association Youth Movement Regional Youth Council (Central) Canoe Club and other clubs under the People's Association Sea Sports Co-ordinating Council.

CYCLING (205/CYC)

1 Know the parts of a bicycle.

2 Know how to maintain a bicycle.

3 Be able to ride a bicycle without assistance and clear obstacles along the route.

4 Be able to mend a puncture, a faulty brake and a dislodged chain with the proper tools.

5 Have a general knowledge of the Highway Code.

6 Know the safety precautions to take while cycling on a main road.

7 Suggest a useful first aid kit to be carried by cyclists.

DIVER (206/DVR)

Attend and successfully complete the Open water Diver Course organised by

the Singapore Underwater Federation (a member of the World Underwater Federation).

EXPEDITION (207/EPD)
1. Where a candidate has not qualified in the following subject(s), appropriate instruction (s) must be given in:

a) map reading and use of compass

b)route planning

c) camping

d) hiking and other safety precautions.

2. Expeditions must be carried out in groups of not less than four, on foot or bicycle:

Age 11 - below 15: Two days including one night in a tent

Age 15 and above: Three days including two nights in a tent

3. Candidates must keep a detailed log of their expedition using photographs and diagrams to show the route and the main, interesting events during the expedition. The log book must be submitted to the examiner who will also verbally interview the candidate about his experience and his role in the group during the expedition.

4. Know how to build a shelter.

5. Know how to ration their water supply (water discipline)

6. Know the general safety precautions



GAMES (208/GAM)

All candidates must participate in the following:

(a) a 'singles' game - e.g. tennis, squash, table tennis, badminton, etc.

(b) a 'team' game requiring more than two players in the side - eg football, hockey, etc.

For each game chosen, they must:

1. Have a sound knowledge of the rules.

2. Know the scoring system.

3. Be conversant with the basic duties and requirements of an umpire/ referee and demonstrate their knowledge.

4. Show a reasonable proficiency in the games of their choice (commensurate with age, physique and health).

5. Have played in at least six organised matches in their chosen 'team' game over a period of one year, preferably for a school or club (not necessary in the first team).

 

HIKING (209/HIK)
1. Know and carry out the necessary preparations for fitness; acquire the correct walking technique before embarking on a planned hike and practice wearing a small haversack.

2. Know the essential equipment, food, attire, footwear and preparations to take:

a) for a one-day hike

b) on a hike, staying at a different base each night for three nights.

3. Know how to pack a haversack to achieve correct weight distribution and easy access to items most quickly needed during the walk.

4. Know the basic weather signs and the measures to be taken to avoid discomfort, danger or the possibility of being cut off. Know when to abandon the hike and take the quickest and safest route back to base.

5. Know the address and telephone number of the meteorological station.

6. Know the general safety precautions to take during a hike and how to handle emergency situations, e.g. bee-attack, etc.

7. Plan a day's hike by map and compass, taking essential precautions to avoid trouble and have rescue on hand should disaster strike, also taking into consideration:

a) weather conditions

b) walking speed within the candidate's capabilities, making allowance for reduced speed when climbing hills; carrying weight in a haversack; meeting rough ground, etc

c) suitable clothing for the season and contents for the haversack,

d) time factors and pre-arranged signals with a responsible adult.

 

LIFE SAVING (210/LIS)

Attain the Life Saving 1, 2, 3 award of the Singapore Life Saving Society (a member of the Royal Life Saving Society).

MAP READING (211/MPR)

1. Have a sound knowledge of the scale of maps and of simple means of measuring distances on maps.

2. Be able to read the conventional signs of the 1: 25,000 maps and other maps in common use by cyclists and motorists.

3. Be able to understand contours, relief shading and the general principles of intervisibility of points marked on maps.

4. Be able to set a map accurately.

5. Be able to set and read a compass and understand other simple methods of finding their position on a map.

6. Know the grid system of referring to places by co-ordinates

7. Make their way on foot on the countryside from one point to one or more other points marked on the map, for a distance of no less than 8 km.

8. Know how to identify own and other locations along the route.

9. Know how to maintain map reading equipment, e.g. map, compass, protractor, etc.

10. Having discovered a casually in an area away from a road, giving directions to a First Aid party using map references, etc. to guide them to the casualty.

Attain the following organised by the Singapore Life Saving Society (a member the Royal Life Saving Society):

- Basic Resuscitation

- Water Safety

GARDENING (213/GDN)

1. Know the basic element of House Gardening.

2. To show the ability in the Gardening skill. e.g. To upkeep the plant & planting.

3. Know at least 3 fertilizers for plants.

4. To maintain the House gardening,

5. To list the care measures needed for plants/flowers.

6. To provide information on Tropical plants.

7. Know at least 3 tools used for gardening.

ARCHERY (214/ARC)

The course of archery must be conducted and/or certified by an instructor with the following minimum credentials:

> Obtained a certification of at least level 1 of theory for National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) conducted by Singapore Sports Council.
>Obtained at least an archery basic/beginner instructor certificate from any country’s archery national governing body.
>Awarded a certificate in recognition of participation and contribution towards the promotion of archery and excellence of performance by an institution of higher learning (e.g. Polytechnics or Universities).
>With at least 3 years of coaching experience.


A participant must achieved the following to attain an Archery Badge.

>Successfully completed at least 20 hours of archery training over a period of at least 4 weeks. The maximum ratio of participants to instructor during all training is 7:1.
>Be able to hit a score of at least 200 out of 36 arrows at 20 metres on a 122 cm target face.
>Know parts of a basic standard recurved bow and arrows.
>Obtained general knowledge on different types of bows, arrows and bowstrings.
>Able to do basic bow tuning using a basic standard recurved bow.
>Able to make a new complete arrows and able re-fletch arrows.
>Obtained knowledge on all safety aspects of archery including how to set up a safe shooting range.

 

AIR RIFLE (215/ARF)
0.22 AIR RIFLE CLASSIFICATION

The classification is as follows:

1 Sighters - 3 rounds sighters on target (Card No 32).

This is for the cadets to adjust their aim.

No scores will be recorded.

2 Match 1 - Application: 5 rounds on target (Card No 32).

3 Match 2 - Application: 5 rounds on air (Pistol Target).

4 Match 3 - Snap: 5 rounds on target (Card No 32).

There will 5 exposure of 6 seconds each. 1 round will

be fired during each exposure. No time limit for

reloading.
