The Marauders were a group of close friends, some of the most clever students attending Hogwarts at the time. They used their talents for, among other things, legendary feats of mischief. Their names were James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. As later Peter betrayed his friends, some people prefer considering Lily Evans (who later married James) as a fourth Marauder, especially in art works.
Severus "Snivellus" Snape was their nemesis, and he nearly got killed by Sirius. James Potter saved his life, and Snape never forgave him for this.
Their most famous work is probably the Marauders Map, which shows Hogwarts in every detail, including the actual position of everyone in the castle or in the grounds.
They were all Animagi, except for Remus who is a werewolf, and they're supposed to be all Gryffindors, even if we still don't know for sure.

James Potter
The leader of the group, he had great marks, was clever and also good-looking, not to mention a Quidditch star.
Of course, there was the small problem of his pranking habits and the fact that he illegally became an animagus with his friends in his 5th year. James could turn into a stag and was nicknamed "Prongs".
He was somewhat of a prat when he was younger, tormenting Snape just because he was bored, but he eventually grew out of it, which is one of the reasons Lily finally agreed to date him in their 7th year.
He eventually marries Lily, and has a son who inherits his good looks and most likely his personality.
James was also one of the members of the Order of the Phoenix during the first war against Voldemort, which doesn't really surprise any of us since he hated the Dark Arts quite a bit. He and Lily were killed by Voldemort after Peter betrayed them.
Sirius Black
Probably the most reckless of the group, Sirius usually got the other three to go along with a prank, when even James wasn't sure if it was a good idea. He almost got Snape killed when he suggested that if he wanted so badly to know where Remus went every month that he should go check out the Whomping Willow. Probably he was just as reckless after graduation as he was in school, seeing that he owed a flying motorcycle.
He was fiercely protective of his friends, and would have done anything for them. He was believed to be guilty of selling out James and Lily to old Voldie, but he'd suggested that they switch the secretkeeper to Peter so he would be a decoy. He was Harry's godfather and he could transform into a large black dog, which greatly resembles Professor Trelawney's favorite death omen, the Grim.
During the first fight against Voldemort, Sirius was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. His family, "the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black", is a bunch of pureblood nutters, producing some fan favorites like Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. He gave his old family home, 12 Grimmauld Place, to the Order to use as a headquarters.
He dies fighting to protect his best friend's son, falling through the veil in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic.
Remus Lupin
The quiet voice of reason in the group, Remus is a werewolf. But that didn't keep him from attending Hogwarts or becoming friends with the other boys. And even when his three friends discovered his illness, they weren't put off by it in the least. This discovery led to their eventual illegal animagi transformations. He almost killed Snape as a result of one of Sirius's pranks, and the slimeball has never liked him since. In their fifth year, Remus was named as a prefect for Gryffindor House.
He eventually became the most popular DADA professor in Harry's third year, in spite of Snape's attempts to get him fired. Remus is currently unable to get a job anywhere due to the work of Dolores Umbridge and others in the Ministry of Magic, but he is still working for the Order of the Phoenix as he did more than a decade earlier.
Peter Pettigrew
This rather timid, fat little boy turned out to be the one that betrayed his friends, revealing the Potters hiding place to Voldemort. He also escaped in the sewers as a rat, leaving Sirius accused of mass-murdering.
When Sirius and Remus found him, he escaped again and searched for Voldemort. He helped his old master in his return to power.
Probably he's the character I hate the most.
