The family home of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, one of the most prominent pure-blood Wizarding familes, is located in London at 12, Grimmauld Place. Unplottable and hidden away behind a Fidelius Charm, between two shabby London Muggle houses, the house is in ruins since the death of Mrs. Black. Her eldest son, Sirius, was the owner of the place. Sirius gave the house to the Order of the Phoenix to use as a headquarters, and Dumbledore put the Fidelius Charm on the house and is its Secret Keeper. The meetings of the Order take place here, and Harry was brought there for safe-keeping as well. Harry, Hermione, and the Weasley children spent a lot of time trying to clean the house up and getting rid of pests and dangerous magic items, but it was slow work. Magical creatures had moved in and were very difficult to dislodge and Kreacher, the house-elf, tried to stop the members of the Order from throwing away the many dark magic items with which the house was filled. Kreacher (whose ancestors have served the family home of the Blacks for centuries) is the House-Elf of Grimmauld Place. He is nasty and rude to the current inhabitants of the house, and doesn't do much actual upkeep. He is devoted to the mother of Sirius and to some relatives of her - the Malfoys. Back to top
