Joanna Preston has won the inaugural Kathleen Grattan Prize, the richest for poetry in New Zealand, and receives $16,000, plus publication of her collection The Summer King by Otago University Press.
Trevor Byrne's novel Ghosts and Lightning Cast No Shadow will come out from Canongate in 2009. Also to be published in 2009 are three poetry collections, Anne Berkeley's, provisionally called The Men from Praga (Salt) Claire Crowther's The Curse of Having To Act Natural (Shearsman) and Karen Annesen's How To Fall (Salt).
Emma Darwin's new novel A Secret Alchemy will be published by Headline Review in November 2008. Also coming out this year are Carolyn Lewis's novel Missing Nancy (Accent Press), and poetry collections from Sue Rose, The Dark Room (Bluechrome), Frank Dullaghan, On the Back of the Wind (Cinnamon Press) and Owen Gallagher, A Good Enough Love (Peterloo). 2008 will also see the publication of Mo McAuley�s first collection of short stories, The A-Z Man (the title story has been described by Rose Tremain as an �adroit and highly original story about a loner slowly going mad in Regents Park�).
On the prizewinning front, Emma Darwin's novel The Mathematics of Love was longlisted for Le Prince Maurice Prize 2008 and Geraldine Paine, Sue Rose and Pamela Johnson were all shortlisted in the Open Poetry Sonnet Competition. Owen Gallagher was joint first prize winner at the Smurfit/Samhain International Poetry Competition 2007

Claire Crowther's first collection, Stretch of Closures came out from Shearsman in 2007 and has been shortlisted for the Aldeburgh festival first collection prize.
Charles Bennett's collection How To Make a Woman Out of Water came out from Enitharmon in 2007
Kate Noakes' first collection Ocean to Interior came out from Mighty Erudite in November 2007. She has another, The Wall Menders coming out later in 2008.
Jenny Lewis has a collection out, Fathom,, from Carcanet (Oxford Poets).
Maria Donovan's first collection of stories, Pumping Up Napoleon, came out from Seren in 2007.

- Mike Thomas was a prizewinner in the 2007 Rhys Davies Short Story competition
- Alexandra Fox won first prize at HISSAC (Highlands and Islands Short Story Association Competition).
- Carole Bromley was commended in the Arvon Poetry Competition
- Sue Rose won third prize in the Canterbury Poet of the Year competition
- Anne Shewring won first prize in the Leaf Books short story competition 2007
- Mo McAuley was commended in the Writers Inc competition 2007
- Rosie Shepperd was awarded a Writers Inc bursary for her poems
- Lynda Nash won first prize in the poetry section of the Aber Valley Arts and Literature Festival competition
- Kate Noakes won first prize in the 2007 Cheshire Poetry Competition
- Maria Donovan was a prizewinner in The Lancet's fiction competition, 2007
