Teaching a Chicken to Swim
The first anthology of work by graduates of the Masters in Writing course contains 19 writers - poets, short-story writers and novelists. Many have already achieved publishing success in their fields and, as Helen Dunmore remarks in her Foreword, are "making a stir in the review columns". Even the biographical notes at the back are pretty impressive, with their lists of publications and competition winners (and they didn't even get around to mentioning Victor Tapner's Cardiff International Poetry Competition win!).
The writing itself is even more impressive - poems from Amanda Dalton, Barbara Bentley, Lynne Rees, Frank Dullaghan, Victor Tapner, Malcolm Lewis, Fiona Owen and Julie Rainsbury; novel extracts from Richard Evans, Robert Doyle and Maria McCann; stories from Ed Boyne, Euron Griffith, Pam Johnson, Paul Lenehan, Mo McAuley, Dan Rhodes, Sarah Salway and the late Caryl Ward, to whom the book is dedicated.
As Rob Middlehurst says in his Introduction, there was so much good work available that a startling amount had to be left out, and there is certainly scope for Chicken No 2, which would be every bit as strong.
