On 23 May 2003, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) released its statement on the Culling of Stray Cats.

Dozens of stray cats has been rounded up by town councils and has been put down in the past week. Even those strays under the "Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme" (original page at AVA's website has been removed) are not spared. Under this scheme, volunteers are allowed to work with the town councils to contain the cat population through sterilisation. Local animal lovers are doing their best to stop the killing.

Animal welfare organisations were not informed of this culling campaign. Suspicious aroused when many cats that live on the streets under the care of volunteers have gone missing from the neighborhood. Reports later confirmed that it was true that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has been culling strays islandwide.

Such killing is an extreme measure. It is only an easy way out. Even if these animals are not accepted by part of the community, we believe that other measures can be improvised.

The killing has to stop. It's their world too.
