Make future pet-owners foster one first

It is not the first time Singaporeans have been encouraged to adopt, and not buy, a pet.

Surely, there must be a reason why this encouragement falls on deaf ears, and many resort to the more expensive option of buying a pet.

Could the Government do a review and study why the adopt-a-pet campaign never takes off?

Pets are abandoned when the owners tire of them. Instead of putting the pets to sleep, can we consider having a foster programme for owners to adopt them?

There should be a law requiring all pet owners to have fostered a pet before they are allowed to buy one.

All pets need to be licensed by the relevant authorities. Before pet owners get a licence to own a pet, they should be required to have adopted a pet in the foster programme.

Their fostering record will show if they are ready to own a pet.

This will reduce the increasing number of pets being abandoned and help save the lives of abandoned pets.

All lives of creatures great and small are precious.

For the true animal lover, a pet adopted or bought is still a life to love and adore.
