ABOVE: BMW Motorsport have a tradition of commissioning 'Art Cars'. Several well-known artists have designed striking new one-off liveries for BMW racers.

ABOVE & BELOW: The BMW 320i Turbo IMSA

The McLaren team ran this uprated 320i for BMW North America in the IMSA series from 1977 to 1979. Mclaren added a Garret Ai Research turbocharger to boost performance.

ABOVE & BELOW: The BMW M3 GTR

This car was built by BMW and Schnitzer for the 2001 ALMS series in America. It incorporated a purpose-built 4.0 litre V8 engine, giving enough performance to beat the Porsche 911 GTR3. Type approval was obtained by the production of limited edition road car (or 'homolgation special') based on the racing version. The car raced only for one season in the US but was entered into several European endurance events between 2003 and 2005.
