Unfortunately the 935/2.0 was not quick 'out of the box'. The engine had only been developed on the bench and was hamstrung by inadequate gear ratios. To cap it all it had been a blazing hot day and the new lightweight glass fibre bulkhead between the engine and cockpit turned it in to a furnace for driver Jacky Ickx.

Undeterred, Porsche engineers returned to the factory and cut a new set of gears and added an asbestos sheet to the bulkhead. Four weeks later, the car was rolled out at the supporting race for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. This time, in front of the rolling cameras, the 935 gave the opposition not the slightest chance lapping 2 seconds faster than the nearest rival. Second placed Hans Heyer finished half a lap down.

Having proven his point in spectacular style, Dr Fuhrmann retired the 935/2.0 - raced only twice - to the Porsche museum. In later years, the Kremer brothers built on the success of the basic 935/77 and 935/02 formula with their all conquering K3 and K4 cars.

Meanwhile, never an organisation happy to rest on its laurels, Porsche would be back the following year with something even more spectacular....the 935/78 "Moby Dick"
