During Sonic's adventures, he discovered that there are other realities that exist in various dimensions and zones.  Some of these are similar to Sonic's reality, while others are completely different. Now Sonic's world will meet a different world.

Robotnik calls out Sonic's name and waits as Sonic approaches him.  Sally wears a device on her head that makes her lose control of her mind.  Robotnik is ready for his final showdown with Sonic and asks him for any last words.  Swatbots appear from the floor and shoot Sonic.  Sonic disappears, leaving only a cloud of smoke.

"The Last Game Cartridge Hero"

Part I:
Two children get ready for school as Sonic's hand appears from the television.  Sonic pulls his hand back in and realizes he is only able to float.  Meanwhile, Robotnik celebrates over his victory.  Sally is placed in a cell next to Tails and Rotor and does not respond when Tails calls her name.

Later, Sonic hears voices that say they are glad that they are back home.  An image of a boy appears with a controller in his hands.  He is confused, and the girl says he turned on a videotape instead.  Sonic decides that since he cannot come to the children, he'll bring them here.  Sonic grabs the hands of the children and pulls them into the zone.  The children, Steve and Jessie, are surprised to see the real Sonic.  Sonic explains that they are in a zone in between the one that he is from and the one that the children are from.  When the children came in, the energy at one point in the zone became stronger.  Sonic takes the hands of the children, and they walk forward until they disappear.

Part II:
Robotnik has his swatbots bring Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, and Tails to him.  He explains that his missile will place his satellites in orbit and keep the freedom fighters prisoner for eternity. Sally is already in the lower level of the rocket.  Sonic, Steve, and Jessie appear from a portal in front of some swatbots.  Sonic defeats one swatbot before Steve and Jessie are captured. Robotnik tells Sonic he must stop if he wants to save his friends and reminds Sonic that he can do any cruel thing he wants to do.  Sonic tells Robotnik not to hurt a hair on the children's heads, so Robotnik plucks one from Sonic.  Sonic becomes angry and attacks Robotnik and the surrounding swatbots.  Sonic grabs the children's hands and runs toward the missile.  Meanwhile, Snively tries to wake Robotnik.  Robotnik realizes that he fell on his remote control and activated the launch sequence too soon.  As Sonic tries to figure out which button to press to stop the launch, Robotnik finds the portal from which Sonic appeared.  Robotnik decides to go through the portal just as Sonic stops the missile.  Suddenly a light appears and pulls Sonic and the children towards it.  Jessie loses her grip on a bar and falls toward the portal.  Steve grabs on to Sonic and Sonic follows Jessie.  They soon land in front of a shadow.

Part III:
Robotnik and dark-colored swatbots surround Sonic, Steve, and Jessie.  Robotnik shows Sonic a new weapon that is being created by different versions of Robotnik.  Steve says it must be because of the multiple universes.  Sonic is surprised that Steve knows about this, and Jessie explains that he watches Space Trek.  Sonic tries to figure out what that is when Robotnik orders for the prisoners to be taken away.  A swatbot throws Sonic into a room with two men named Mori and Jerry.  Robotnik explains to Snively that a multi-dimensional portal was created and linked to their world.  The device is powerful enough to make Robotnik the ruler of all universes.  Another Robotnik hears this, and the other Robotniks turn on Robotnik.

Meanwhile, Mori explains that in his world, Sonic is a character from a video game.  Jerry says that they were told Sonic was the creation of some sketches, and Mori adds that the sketches were actually based on transmissions from a device.  Suddenly Robotnik appears at the door and tells everyone to stand back and be quiet.  The door explodes, freeing the prisoners.  Robotnik's head is removed and a woman's head appears.  She explains that she was promoting a new game when something happened.  Mori explains that an electrical storm created a link using the prototype. Jerry adds that whoever is in charge here ended up connecting the prototype and connected it to a system.  Steve points out that Robotnik is about to be attacked by the other Robotniks.  Sonic runs and rescues both Robotnik and Snively, who are not grateful.  The swatbots turn to attack Sonic and his friends.  Jerry explains that the prototype can be shut down by punching in a code into a large control pad.  The code is the same for one of the Sonic games, so Sonic grabs Steve and runs toward the control pad.  Steve tells Sonic the code, and Sonic quickly pushes the buttons.  The swatbots shut down and everyone celebrates.  Steve wonders how to get home, and Sonic asks if Jerry and Mori know what to do.  Jerry says they can help, but Sonic will be unable to return. Sonic says goodbye to Steve and Jessie and tells them they can see what Sonic is up to by playing the next video game.  Sonic, Robotnik, and Snively are sent back to their world, where Sally and Tails greet them.  Back in their world, Steve and Jessie get ready to play Sonic's newest video game.

"The Substitute Freedom Fighters"

Just in case you wondered how the freedom fighters were captured and later rescued in the previous story, this is what happened.

Rotor shows everyone his micro belt-cam, a device that can record actions in combat. Rotor will wear the camera on his belt and later study the footage captured to determine how to improve the freedom fighters' teamwork.  Just as Rotor attaches the device, an alarm sounds and the freedom fighters leave to protect their home.

Later, Larry Lynx (seen in Sonic the Hedgehog #12) stops by and sees a picture of Robotnik on a monitor.  Larry realizes that the freedom fighters are captured and thinks that he cannot do anything to help them.  Suddenly Larry notices another monitor where freedom fighters are training. He runs to the training grounds where Cyril the Eagle (also in Sonic #12) trains Arlo, Penelope, Dylan, and Hamlin.  Larry explains the situation and says they will have to come up with a plan on the way to Robotropolis.

At Robotropolis, a group of swatbots patrol the area.  Larry stands in the middle, and the swatbots end up shooting each other instead of Larry.  Cyril flies ahead to see if the coast is clear as the group collects the laser guns from the swatbots.  When Cyril returns, the group heads forward. A door is locked, so Dylan uses one of his quills to pick the lock.  The group heads inside and use Hamlin as a bowling ball to destroy the swatbots.  Soon the group finds Sonic captured by swatbots.  Larry says they must let Sonic take care of himself and find the other freedom fighters. After destroying more swatbots, the freedom fighters are rescued.

The following day, Sally rewards the group with watches that will notify the group if the freedom fighters need help again.  Sally also gives Larry a medal and suggests that he lead the Substitute Legion of Freedom Fighters.  Larry accepts the position and smiles.

"Knuckles Quest 2"

Knuckles left the Chaotix in charge of guarding the Floating Island as he took on a personal quest to find King Acorn's sword.  After hearing the words of the Ancient Walkers (Sonic #42), Knuckles traveled to a secluded area of the Great Forest and found a cottage.  Suddenly a Devil Watcher appears, which surprises Knuckles since he knows that a Devil Watcher is in a fairy tale.  Knuckles punches a tree, which lands on the Devil Watcher.  The Devil Watcher disappears, and Knuckles continues inside.  To his surprise, the cottage looks large on the inside.  Knuckles then notices Blood Beasts, also from a fairy tale.  Knuckles knows that attacking the dominant one will defeat both monsters, so Knuckles kicks the closest one.  The two Blood Beasts disappear, and another creature appears behind Knuckles.  Knuckles fights the monsters as they appear until he remembers the words of the Ancient Walkers.

Suddenly Knuckles realizes what is going on and apologizes out loud for his intrusion.  He explains that he is on a peaceful mission with the intent of finding King Acorn's sword.  The illusions disappear, and the true form of the cottage appears.  A hooded figure explains that Knuckles can speak with him since he learned his secret. Knuckles said that the monsters gave the charlatan away.  The charlatan explains that he uses his power to protect himself and, at one point in time, to entertain the king.  He explains that he does not know the location of the sword, but Knuckles may be able to learn more if he travels to the Land of Dark--if he can find the location.  Knuckles is upset that the charlatan doesn't know the location and leaves the cottage.  The charlatan says that if Knuckles ever sees the king again to tell him that Merlin Prower wishes him well.  Knuckles says he will see the king again when he finds the sword.

(Although Knuckles goes on a side quest in Sonic #44, his story will continue in #45.)
