Knothole exists in its own zone three hours in the past (from Sonic the Hedgehog #50), so many former citizens do
not wish to live there anymore. If someone moves toward the outskirts
of the village, an invisible barrier prevents further movement. The
only way to leave Knothole is by the Great Oak slide.
Sonic runs and bounces through Knothole's tall trees until he comes to a
halt at a particular tree. Inside a hole in the tree, Tails and Uncle
Chuck stand in shock as Uncle Chuck's equipment crashes. Uncle Chuck
appears from the tree and scolds Sonic; every time Sonic accelerates quickly,
Uncle Chuck's machines become wrecked, and Uncle Chuck fails at another attempt
to determine Sonic's maximum speed. Uncle Chuck asks Sonic what he is
rebelling against, and Sonic asks what Uncle Chuck has (to rebel against).
As Sonic walks away, he begins to remember what happened previously.
Sally makes a speech, telling everyone that it is time for order.
She then introduces everyone to her new council: Doctor Quack (who
will help heal the kingdom), Rotor (who can technologically advance the kingdom),
Geoffrey St. John (who will set a standard of justice), and Sonic (who is
popular and fast). Sonic falls asleep, bored with Sally's speech.
Meanwhile, at the Devil's Gulag, Warlord Kodos and Uma Arachnis are transported
from a royal aircraft.
Tails wakes up Sonic and explains that they need to do their test.
Sonic walks toward Uncle Chuck, who gives Sonic a device. Sonic puts
on the headphones and goggles and begins to run. Again Sonic's mind
begins to recall the past.
Uncle Chuck speaks to Sally, who agrees that Knothole would be the best
place for the roboticized Mobians to live. Sally says she must get
approval from her father. Sonic assures Uncle Chuck that King Acorn
will approve the idea. Later, Sonic tries to find everyone. Tails
and Amy Rose explain that Sally and Uncle Chuck already left to ask King
Acorn about Knothole. Sonic is furious and makes his way to the castle.
Once Sonic is outside the castle, he sees Sally talking to a sad Uncle Chuck.
Sonic knows that it is bad news.
At the Devil's Gulag, two guards escort Warlord Kodos along the cells.
One guard asks how Kodos escaped from the Zone of Silence. The other
guard explains that Kodos escaped when Ixis Naugus escaped (in Sonic #53). Snively listens
from his cell and is intrigued by the news.

At a beach, Uncle Chuck complains about his destroyed piece of equipment
and asks Sonic why he isn't paying attention to the tests. When Sonic
does not respond, Tails asks if they will find out how fast Sonic can run.
Uncle Chuck admits that they have a better chance of figuring that out than
trying to guess what is bothering Sonic. After studying some blueprints,
Uncle Chuck gives Sonic the signal. Sonic runs towards the water and
continues running on the water. His mind recalls an event that happened
a few days ago.
Sonic asks Rotor if he understands his situation correctly. Rotor
wants to find out what happened to his mother and brother, but Princess Sally
said he couldn’t leave. Sonic tells Rotor he will handle the situation,
explaining that a guy should be able to follow his heart. After getting
a guard to let him inside, Sonic approaches Sally. Doctor Quack tells
Sally he cannot get a hospital operating in two days, and Geoffrey agrees
with him. Sonic interrupts and tells Sally that she knows what it is
like to want to find her parents. Sally agrees, but she says she also
knows about sacrifice. She tells Sonic that Rotor is needed to help
get everything back to normal. Sonic leaves the room and tries to tell
Rotor the bad news.
At the Devil's Gulag, the guards escort Uma Arachnis to her cell.
Snively continues to listen and decides he should exploit Ixis' power.
He presses a computer chip-like device on his thumb as he smiles.
Uncle Chuck is ready to test how Sonic runs in an artificial environment,
a device that looks like a giant exercise wheel. Sonic says he's already
been in an artificial environment; it was created when Uncle Chuck lied about
his parents being dead. Sonic begins to run before Uncle Chuck can respond.
As he runs, Sonic's mind recalls what happened in Mobotropolis a few hours
in the past.
Sonic is bored and walks along the streets of Mobotropolis. Suddenly
Sonic sees Rosie, who is looking after some children as they play. Rosie
says that the kids are off on some adventure, and Sonic begs for her not
to say that word. Sonic explains that he hates everything now that Robotnik
is gone since he feels he can no longer make a difference. Rosie tells
Sonic that her cousin and Sally's mentor once told her that "the only difference
is the one you make." Sonic repeats the phrase a couple of times and
thanks Rosie before he leaves.
In another location, some eggbots appear from device that looks like a bird's
nest with eggs. The eggbots are responding to the radio signal from
Snively's thumb. Now the robots are searching for Ixis Naugus.
In the Great Forest, Tails flies and chases a dragonfly. Uncle Chuck
tells Sonic that they have to talk about his parents. Uncle Chuck explains
that if Sonic knew his parents were alive, Sonic would never think clearly
until he knew they were free. Robotnik would have used Sonic's emotions
to control him and win the war. Sonic believes Uncle Chuck and gives
him a hug. Suddenly a breeze begins to blow and eggbots fly overhead.
Sally contacts Sonic on his wrist communicator and tells him that he needs
to return to Mobotropolis.
