The Star Map is a visual representation of the galaxy as explored by the empire. It will display planets and fleets from any other empires that are visible. Icons in green are one's own planets and fleets, white planets are uncolonized and red planets and fleets belong to other players. From here watch as empires grow, fleets travel across space and planets become colonized. The dotted green line is the radar of the planet in the center. This radar will allow the planet owner to watch everything that happens within the radar range and also discover any previously unseen planets/fleets. In order for a planet to have a functioning radar it must have an infastructure of at least 20%. Therefore recently colonized and conquered planets will not have a functioning radar, although the radar range will be displayed.
The map itself is simply an X,Y coordinate system grid with the coordinates 0,0 at the very center of the galaxy.. However this grid is not designed as expected, it is inverted along the Y axis so that the negative Y axis is to the north and the positive Y axis is to the south. The X axis remains correctly displayed with the positive axis to the east and the negatie axis to the west. |

Planets are not the only objects that have radar. Certain ship classes also have radar capabilities and can therefore detect other fleets and planets. Currently destroyers are the only available ship class with radar abilities. The radar range of the destroyer is 5 spaces, while a planet has a radar radius of 20 spaces. One "space" is defined as the amount of distance between the coordinates 0,0 and 0,1 in a straight line. As destroyers move throughout the galaxy planets and other fleets will enter the destroyer's radar radius and a telegram will be sent to the empire's internal message box, stating the discovery. Ship classes that do not have radar abilties are fighters and frigates, such ships can fly directly over a planet and it will not be displayed on the map. |

The map itself is displayed in Macromedia Flash Player. When the page is first opened it will take several seconds after this point before the map itself is loaded. Once this is done it may or may not be legible, depending on how much is explorered. At the bottom left corner of the map is the zoom in and zoom out buttons. Single-clicking on the appropriate link will either expand or contract the map. By zooming into the map it will be possible to read the planet and fleet names, as initially they are too small to read without a magnifying glass. While these links are useful, they are not the best way to utilize the map.
Since the map is displayed in Macromedia Flash Player there is an easier and more effective way of zooming in and out. Right-click on the map and the menu to the right appears. This menu has a zoom in and zoom out feature that will perform this function as well as center the map where it was clicked on. There is also a show all feature that will correct any zooming mistakes, as it will zoom the map back until the entire explorered galaxy can fit onto the screen. This is helpful for moving one's attention to the other side of the galaxy quickly. |
