Welcome to the 2004 Silverbacks
This year marks the 7th anniversary of the Ottawa Silverbacks; the team was created in the summer of 1996 and went by the name of the Latin Roosters, in 2000 the team changed to the new name of Silverbacks. Through the years, we have advanced through the ranks of tier four all the way up to tier one. Last year the team went through tough times on the field, our approach to the game was diminished by a few players which no longer are here, we plan this year to go back to our winning ways and to be competitive. This team has three championships in seven years and has finished with a winning record six out of seven years we want to add to that winning percentage.
Selfish attitudes and individualism will no longer exist here, this is a team and we will win and lose as a team, those players that do not wish to participate and who create problems on and off the field will be asked to leave. If such an offence is committed at the beginning of the season, the player will be released from the team with full refund. If the offence takes place half through the season the player will lose his money and be dismissed. This division takes baseball seriously, if you plan to just have a good time and goof around this is not the tier or team for you. Managers, assistants and players are here to give one hundred percent on the field; we accept nothing less, all we ask is that you take this seriously and that you give it all. Encourage your teammates, and they will encourage you.
In terms of playing time, the team will go with its best players as starters, if you don't make the starting line up don't assume that you won't play! Everyone plays! Starting positions are not carved in stone and any one can lose their starting job. The team will be participating in tournaments and we are trying to get a 35-40 game season, 24 games from the regular season and 15 games coming from tournaments, so that means that everyone will get a chance to play. On regular season games management will put on the field what they consider to be the best line up.
Practice makes the master; therefore we will practice once a week on a Saturday or Sunday morning, which ever the team decides. Let me remind you that, absences from practice wins or looses starting jobs so be there! Time costs money and if you don't come to practice we will charge a $10 fine for those that don't show up and have no valid reason. Of course if the reason is a valid one you will not be penalized. The money will be used for the purchase of equipment or towards tournaments and league fees. Speaking of fees, we have set this years fees, the cost is $160 per player. This is one of the most affordable teams in the league. Uniforms this year will be gray pants and black shirt, we don't have enough jerseys from last year, but we will order a few more for those that are new to the team. Make sure that you have the right color co-ordinates, failure to do so will be enforced by means of $10 fines.
Cheques will be payable to our team manager Ariel Luna and must be made by May 15th. Those players that don't pay won't play! The team looses money every year because players don't pay, this year that won't happen. Fines will be paid in cash to Alberto Vallejos, he will be in charge of fines and disciplinary measures.
We would like to wish you good luck this year and let me remind you that we are here to have fun and to compete, we chose you because you are a winner and a team player that is what we want the most. Catch the heat, bring out the boys of summer and let's play ball!
