Coupe de Grace: The BMW 6 Series
Flagship luxury sports coupe of the 1970s & 80s.
Acclaimed for its simple yet graceful design, the BMW 6 Series was an instant classic. Over 86,000 of this elegant coupe were built between 1976-1989.
The 6 Series was widely viewed by the motoring press of its day as successfully filling its own unique niche between luxury Mercedes and performance Porsche coupes. BMW's flagship performed its role as a luxury sports coupe with distinction, lending its aura of class to the entire BMW line throughout its 13-year production.
As they have for nearly 30 years, 6 Series coupes continue to grace
the highways of the world with their beautiful style and uniquely Bavarian
spirit. Today's generation of automotive designers would do well to emulate
the Sixer's combination of clean, understated design and balanced performance.

Sixer, a classic '86 635CSi.
The 6 Series remains a class act, with nice examples both plentiful
and affordable for the coupe aficionado. I have happily owned three Sixers:
a polaris silver '83 633CSi, a sapphire blue '84 633CSi, and an alpine
white '86 635CSi. My '86 had Pacific Blue buffalo hide leather sport seats,
15" factory sport rims and M Sport steering wheel. With the odometer reading
81,375 miles on delivery day in March 2000, I was her third owner. But,
what goes around comes around, with my original '83 633CSi returning to
my garage in 2000. Built at BMW Dingolfing in December 1982, my silbersix
sold new for $40,705. Every drive is special, every turn behind the wheel
an event.

Join me as I get behind the wheel of a BMW Sixer and hit the road. These are some stories I've written over the last few years about my 6 Series experience, as originally published in the pages of Sonnenflecke, the newsletter of the Sunbelt Chapter, BMW Car Club of America. The stories, pictures and this site are my way of celebrating BMW's coupe de grace: the magnificent 6 Series. -Rick Sparks
