Vivekananda Study Circle for Poor Children

The Narangadighi Vivekjyoti Pathachakra(NVP) ,is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organisation was established in the year 1992, by the Society for International Development (SID) Belur-Calcutta Chapter, our federation of NGOs to implement comprehensive child development projects in our network. It is a society for project implementation ,documentation, research, training, advocacy and related activities on, 'leadership in promoting the child survival and development revolution' , Convention on the Rights of the Child. We gave impetus to consensus around a new model of development, one that places children- and human beings- at the heart of the development process.

The implementing body is a registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act,1961 No. S/72861 of 1992-93. Also it is registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of Government of India.

The goal as spelt out in the strategy paper of NVP

No child between 3-14 years of age would be a drop- out from school due to marriage, compulsion to earn or any other extraneous factor. Further the education received in school would be of a quality that the grade would justify.

Objectives:

  • Universal primary education
  • Improvement in the quality of education
  • Reduction in the drop out rate of secondary school going children
  • All children (targeted) in the community should attain some basic academic levels of learning and competencies:

-They should learn to read and write
-They should learn to collect, process and analyse information
-They should learn to express themselves
-They should learn to negotiate with the environment ( assertiveness, document literacy, initiative)
-They should acquire skills relevant to their lives and problem solving abilities

This is nearly an ideal situation. But we should try to design the inputs to the children in such a manner that the focus is on development of these abilities.

Basic principles of intervention strategies:

Pedagogy

Pedagogical methods in pre-schools, such as the child-to-child process, would be non-formal,i.e. it would focus more on development of children in terms of their observation and analytical skills, learning would be activity based and joyful for children. Non-formal learning focuses more on unstructured learning, learning through cultivation of abilities, observation, analysis, collection of information, processing information, creative abilities, rather than on providing information as given and unalterable. It is learner centric and is flexible enough to accommodate the varying interests and abilities of learners.

Community mobilisation

Interventions should be community based. The community is the primary stakeholder. They should be partners even in the process of introducing new teaching and developmental methods.

Convergence of resources

Interventions should ultimately aim at strengthening the Government-Non government interface,so that the changes may be sustainable and may be extensive in nature.
Formation of Local Resource Group

Efforts have to be made to facilitate formation of a local resource group who would be able to interact with resource groups and organisations located in various places and contribute to enriching the programmes.
