The Sarada Society for Care & Counselling of AIDS(SSCCA) is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organisation was established in 1998, by the Society for International Development (SID) Belur-Calcutta Chapter, the network NGOs, to serve as a society for professional social work and social science research, training, project intervention ,documentation, advocacy and related activities on ICPD Cairo consensus on programme of action and sustainable development and patterns of empowerment and activities on HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

SSCCA is a registered body under West Bengal Societies Registration Act,1961 No. S/90776 of 1998-1999. SSCCA was an accredited NGO in United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS).


Mission Statement of SSCCA:

"SSCCA and its member organisations promote and defend the right of women and men , including adolescent, to decide freely the number and spacing of their children, and the right to the highest possible level of sexual and reproductive health by developing a sustainable self-reliant society at large."

The Objectives of the SSCCA are:

I. Research

(i) To identify the gaps in research and undertake studies in psycho-social and related issues, studies on target free approach of reproductive and child health initiatives, adolescent health initiatives, independently and collaboratively, with national and international organisations.
(ii) To develop research capacities in NGOs, social work educators and practitioners , health care professionals, trainers and researchers by organising training and providing assistance in the following:

  • Development of sound research programmes to attract funding from various agencies.
  • Development of research proposals.
  • Resource Development - documentation , citation and review of literature

(iii) To use ongoing SSCCA action sites and programmes as major foci for research
(iv) To collaborate with health services and other national and international agencies with whom SSCCA is already working.
(v) To collaborate with national and international agencies working on ICPD agenda.
(vi) To undertake research to influence policy and programmes.

II. Action

(i) To initiate demonstration projects on education,reproductive health initiatives, adolescent health, HIV/AIDS prevention and community care with focus on marginalised groups like women and children.
(ii) To undertake reproductive health initiatives .
(iii) To collaborate with government and non-government organisations to help them evolve interventions.
(iv) To integrate reproductive health initiatives in the existing projects in India and abroad.
(v) To undertake HIV/AIDS intervention projects for different target groups.
(vi) To influence NGO policy and programmes.

III. Training

(i) To identify training needs and develop training modules in Reproductive Health Initiatives ,including HIV/AIDS Counselling and Care
(ii) To develop training and evaluation tools for enhancing effectiveness of training programmes.
(iii) To network with other training institutions and resource organisations.

IV.Capacity Building and Consultancy

As reproductive health initiatives (RHI) and HIV/AIDS are major health issues and would increase in importance for national health programming and policy, the organisations's long-term commitment is to intervene in a systematic and planned way. In oredr to achieve this, the faculties need adequate preparation in terms of knowledge and skill through linkages with national and international organisations. This involves interactions with others in the fields through participation in various conferences, meetings, and educational programmes on reproductive health initiatives, HIV/AIDS and related health areas. The organisation facilitates this process. The organisation is regularly called upon for consultation to other organisations.

Being the implementing agency of the Network of grassroot level NGOs in Eastern India, we have to achieve by 2005:

  • We have to access to quality and affordable reproductive health services, including family planning and sexual health.
  • We have to see significant reductions in infant, child and maternal mortality.
  • We have to measure ( broad-based) to ensure gender equity and equality and the empowerment of women.
  • We have to access to primary education and
  • Closing the " gender gap" in education

Packages of essential services of RCH, we have to provide:

  • Prevention and management of unwanted pregnancy.
  • Services to promote safe motherhood.
  • Services to promote child survival.
  • Reproductive health services for adolescent.
  • Nutritional services for vulnerable groups.
  • Prevention and treatment of reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Health, sexuality and gender information, education and counselling.
  • Establishment of effective referral systems.


Programmes we have to incorporate in different ways:

  • Strengthening NGO's capacities and linkages to improve reproductive health services and information in the network in eastern India.
  • Reproductive health through community involvement with special attention to adolescent and clinical contraception.
  • Comprehensive education for people who are left behind.
  • Expanding access of low income women and men to reproductive health.
  • Expanding sustainable family planning and reproductive health services.
  • Prevention and treatment of STDs and HIV/AIDS prevention,care and counselling.
  • Program for the protection of the nutritional status of women from childhood onwards.
