Itinerary:
We
will begin by reading the book “A to Z Yellowstone” by Lisa Halvorsen. Then we will look at photographs of Yellowstone National Park on the internet. We will find Yellowstone National Park
and identify it on our maps.
We
will watch the Old Faithful webcam in hopes
that we can see the geyser erupt! We
will also watch an online video.
After
we have watched the video and talked about Yellowstone
National Park, we will create our
postcards from Yellowstone. On the other side, we will write three facts
we learned about Yellowstone
National Park and one
question we have about it.
Where is Yellowstone National Park?

Important Information
about Yellowstone:
Yellowstone National
Park is located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. It is the first National Park in the world,
as well as the oldest.

It
covers 3,470 square miles, and is mostly in Wyoming.
Yellowstone
is home to geysers, hot springs,
grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk.

The
park dates back to 12,000 years when Native Americans hunted and fished in the
region.
Jim
Bridger went on an expedition to the Yellowstone
area, and came back to tell of boiling springs, spouting water, and a mountain
of glass and yellow rock. Since he was
known to “spin yarns,” he was pretty much ignored.
The
Continental Divide runs diagonally through the park. The Yellowstone
River and the Snake River both
originate near the Continental Divide, but the Snake River heads towards the
Pacific Ocean while the Yellowstone River heads towards the Atlantic
Ocean.

The
park is bounded by the Gallatin Range, the Beartooth Mountains,
the Absaroka
Mountains, the Wind River Range, the Teton Mountains,
and the Madison Range.
Yellowstone National
Park is home to the largest volcanic system in North America, the Yellowstone Caldera.
62%
of the planet’s known geysers are within Yellowstone National Park. There are over 10,000 hot springs and geysers.
The Old Faithful Geyser is
the most famous geyser in the park.

Yellowstone is also the home to the
Steamboat Geyser, the largest active geyser in the world.
