History
the galapagos islands were first discovered in 1535 by Tomas De Berlanga a spanish priest. throught the 17th and 18th century the galapagos was used as a base for pirates. the Galapagos became part of Ecuador in 1832. In 1835 Charles Darwin, the man who thought of evolution. this was possibly the most signifigant event that happened on these islands. in 1832 the first colony was founded by Jose Villamil, this colony died off after five years. in 1850 the islands were turned into a prizon, the prison was closed in 1860 because of a whaling ship being hijacked by the prisoners. over the next 150 years many nations tried to colonise the galapagos but all failed in their attempets. in 1949 a military base was created for world war 2 by the U.S. in 1968 the galapagos became a national Park.
