This is the grass starter of Red/Blue(/Green) and Firered/Leafgreen. It has two types, Grass and Poison. It has a low speed, but it has high Special attack and Special Defense. It is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, and Psychic type. His resistances are Water, Electric, Grass, and Fight. This pokémon is good to start with, because it has an advantage on both the 1st (Rock/Ground) and the 2nd (Water) Gym. It also has an advantage at the 3rd Gym, cause that is the Electric one, and that is one of this pokémon's resistances.

The fire starter of the first series, Charmander. It starts with the fire type, and gets a second type, flying, when he becomes a Charizard (2nd evolution). It has low Defense, but high Speed and Sp. Attack. It is weak to Water, Ground and Rock type attacks. Its resistances are Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel. This pokémon will have a hard time in the beginning if you choose this one as your first pokémon, because both the first Gym (Ground/Rock) and the second Gym (Water) contain this pokémon's weaknesses. If you start out with this pokémon, which is great later on, I recommend you to catch another pokémon which is strong to Ground, Rock and Water, or you should train alot before you go to the Gym.

Squirtle is the water starter of the first series. It has a high Defense & Special Defense, but lower Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. It is weak to Electric and Grass. And it's resistances are Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel. This pokémon has an advantage at the first Gym (Rock/Ground), and the second Gym uses Water type pokémon, and that is one of Squirtle's resistances. But Water type attacks won't be effective at all, since they are water too. At the third Gym, uses one of Squirtle's weaknesses, Electric. So you'd better get any other pokémon who are strong to Electric there.

Chickorita, the grass starter of the 2nd generation. It has one type, Grass. It has low Speed, but high Defense and Sp. Defense. It is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. It is strong to Water, Electric, Grass, and Ground. This Pokémon is not a really good one to start with, cause both the 1st (Flying) and the 2nd (Bug) Gyms are strong to Grass.

Cyndaquil, the fire starter of the 2nd generation. It has one type, Fire. It has low Defense, But high Sp. Attack and Speed. It is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock. It is strong to Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel. This Pokémon is quite a good one to start with, cause it is easy to train at the beginning (With all the bug Pokémon and Bellsprouts), and the 2nd Gym, with the Bug type, should be easy too.

Totodile, the water starter of the 2nd generation. Again, this one has one type, Water. It has high Attack and Defense, but his Sp. Attack and Speed are a bit low. Its weaknesses are Electric and Grass. That's less the the most Pokémon. It is strong to Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel. This Pokémon is also a good starter, cause there are no Gyms with his weaknesses.
