I feel compelled to use this space to apologize to the half-dozen regular readers I used to have for this page, since this is the first time I've updated it in five months. After the usual year-end rush, I worked on a pair of endeavours that kept me busy for the last four months. One is still ongoing, albeit on a monthly rather than a weekly basis: I'm now the host of Songwriters' Saturdy at Havana Hideout, the Lake Worth hang-out spot recently featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The inaugural monthly edition took place on April 4th; the next Songwriters' Saturday is scheduled for May 9th. The other endeavour that kept me busy came to a successful conclusion on Saturday, April 25th: Inspirit Idol, a fund-raising karaoke competition, was held at the Players Club in Wellington. I was part of the planning committee for this event which is the year's major fund-raiser for Ginny Meredith's music non-profit Inspirit, an organization on which I wrote a lengthy article in the previous issue of Type M.The inaugural edition of Inspirit Idol was very well-attended, so hopefully it brought in a decent sum for a very worthy cause. But as satisfying as my involvement in these projects has been, I have missed working on Type M and its sister blog, The Music Type, so it has been nice to have them both active again. The Music Type was revived a few weeks ago, with posts on a Bill Meredith write-up of my songwriters' night, Inspirit Idol and a review of the latest CD by a Boca garage-rock band called The Pretty Faces. Get used to that name, as The Pretty Faces are one of the bands I plan to see at Sunfest, and a short article on them appears below. So now that both my webpage and blog are back in business, maybe I can win one or two of those six regular readers back. Let's go -- again... April 2009 Lake Worth, Florida

For a band that sounds like it stepped right out of 1981, 2009 has been a pretty good year for The Pretty Faces. Starting with a gig at the now-defunct City Limits club in Delray, this New-Wave/garage-rock outfit has been playing at most of the notable live-music venues in Palm Beach County, including Brogue's Irish Pub in Lake Worth and the Respectable Street Cafe in West Palm Beach. On April 24th, the group released their sophomore release, Another Sound. [Typist Notes: For a review of this album, please visit our blog, The Music Type]. To celebrate the occasion, the band held their first-ever CD release party at Lake Worth's newest live-music venue, Propaganda. "The crowd was amazing," said guitarist/vocalist Hannah Thorslund. "That was so encouraging." Now the group will be performing at Sunfest, and already the band's inclusion in Florida's largest outdoor music festival has yielded some publicity benefits. On April 5th at 6:00 a.m. the group made their television debut on "Daybreak", a Sunday morning news show on West Palm's CBS affiliate WPEC. "The Sunfest PR girl called the CBS PR girl and recommended three bands," said Hannah. "So she... called me and [said] 'You know, I don't know if you want to do it, it's a little early...' I'm like, 'I'll come at three in the morning!'" Even though Sunfest will be the band's large-stage debut, frontman Jeph Thorslund isn't worried about making the transition in their stage show, having received some sage advice from his father-in-law, Hannah's dad, himself a musician. "[He said,] 'If it's gonna be a really big stage, make sure you guys don't get too spread out. You're gonna lose your energy if you do that.'" But when I asked Jeph if he would take advantage of a large stage during his guitar solos, he laughed and said "Probably, yeah." The Pretty Faces appear on the Coors Light stage at Sunfest on Sunday May 2nd at 12:30 p.m. Please consult sunfest.org or theprettyfaces.com for further information.

May 2009 marks the second anniversary of the Type M page, and even though the page went through a lengthy period of dormancy, there are still some highlight to report from this year: * The Music Type The official Type M blog was started in June 2008 to facilitate the generation of content for this page, but really has taken on a life of its own. In terms of traffic, it has drawn three times as much as Type M, but that says a lot about traffic on Wordpress vs. traffic on Geocities, so stay tuned to see how we remedy that situation. * Bill Meredith It was The Music Type that hosted "Bill's Postings", an occasional series of posts about local music columns by my friend Bill, but somehow it's the Type M page that gets the credit on Bill's page. Never mind the traffic, it's still Type M's world after all... Inspirit Speaking of Merediths, Bill's wife Ginny was kind enough to sit for an interview with me about her music non-profit; the resulting article was something I'm extremely proud of...
