Mushrooms

Living near the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon, one of my favorite springtime activities is searching for edible mushrooms.  The shroom season can begin in early April and lasts thru late June. Early season mushrooms are found at the lower elevations. Search locations are elevated as the season goes on.
There are three types of edible mushrooms that we find here in the Blues, Calf Brains (not pictured), Morels, and Cauliflower mushrooms.
Calf Brains begin the season as they can thrive in much cooler conditions.  They are also quite easy to spot because of their brown to orange color.  They can also grow to be as big as a softball.
Morels require warmer temps, season beginning mid to late May, depending on the weather. Color may vary from tan to grey to black.
Morels are considered the best of all wild edible mushrooms

and also the most difficult to spot because their color allows them to blend in with the surroundings.  Cauliflower Mushrooms, AKA Corel Mushrooms, can be found up to the first part of July, providing conditions remain cool.  They can have kind of an earthy flavor, but still eat well.  Cauliflower mushrooms can grow to immense sizes.  I have found individual specimens weighing as much as 5 lbs.

Never eat any wild mushrooms unless you can accurately identify them with absolute certainty.  Happy Hunting!
