Welcome!

IS 201 (Computer Ethics) discusses various ethical concepts and principles that shall also serve as basis on understanding various issues in computing.

This website contains all of my answers to Self-Assessment Questions of this module. Also, as one of the requirements of this course, I created my own code of ethics in computing. Feel free to read them and I would be very glad if you would send me your reactions or opinions on various topics that I discussed here. Happy reading!!!

My Code of Computer Ethics

I believe that I am responsible of all my actions, therefore:

  • I shall use my knowledge in positive ways and develop programs that will only be beneficial to my fellow citizens.
  • I shall participate in sharing of information in whatever form it maybe.
  • I shall strive to improve my skills by acquiring new knowledge about computers constantly and keep myself updated regarding latest threads in information technology.
  • I shall give due credit to others whose works provide contributions to my work.
  • I shall use standards in developing a system and be able to apply it in every aspect of my work.
  • I shall not take advantage of privileges given to me as an administrator of systems. Furthermore, I shall not obtain, alter nor destroy information without proper authorization or valid/legal purposes.

As an end-user of technology,

  • I shall use the software that I will purchase according to the license agreement that comes with it.
  • I shall recognize the developer of the software that I will be using for my work.
  • I shall not profit money out of a software/program that I do not develop.
  • I shall not deform nor modify websites which I do not have permission to do so.
  • I shall not use false account to purchase or obtain services in online stores.
  • I shall observe proper etiquette when using online discussion forums and chat rooms.

As a member of a society, in general,

  • I shall respect privacy of others by not intruding into their computers without valid reasons. In addition, I shall not open their personal files without their knowledge.
  • I shall not propagate false information throughout the internet.
  • I shall not use the identity of others in e-mails or chat rooms to deceive someone.
  • I shall be vigilant on possible threat of computer crimes in cyberspace. Thus, I shall report any illegal activities that I will come across to proper authorities.
  • I shall share my knowledge to other people especially to those who have no opportunities to study computer-related topics in schools.
  • I shall obey laws and regulations that are enacted to protect the rights of the people. Moreover, I shall avoid getting involved in illegal activities that may harm other people psychologically, financially and physically. Further, I shall not support someone in any ways that will contradict these laws.

I do hereby promise to abide by this code of ethics, and, hopefully, others will do the same.
