picture of organic products People are becoming health-conscious in terms of their intake. In past, it was hard to find organic only products selling stores. However, now we can easily get them. There are varieties of foods under the name of “Well-Being”. For example, at “Green Village” , there is everything that ordinary supermarket has, from dairy products to fruits, vegetables, and so on.

What is a healthy diet?

A healthy diet is low in fat, particularly saturated fat, and high in starch and fibre such as oats, bran, rice, potatoes, lentils, beans and pasta as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. Protein plays a vital role in a healthy, balanced diet and can be found in many foods including meat, fish, dairy products, eggs and cereals.
For example,a pregnant women would need particular foods that are rich in iron (lean red meat), calcium (dairy products, fish with bones (e.g. sardines, anchovies) and folic acid.

Simple guidelines for a healthy diet

  • Cut down on fat - excessive amounts of saturated fat can lead to high cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease, not to mention weight gain!

  • Reduce intake of sugar - this is one of the easiest ways to cut the calories without losing other nutrients in your diet.

  • Try to steam, bake or grill foods instead of frying them even if you prefer them to be fried.

  • Use yoghurt instead of cream and use semi-skimmed or skimmed milk products instead of full fat

How do you distinguish organic product?

The certified organic labels are certainly not labeled in every product. The ones that has labels means that the producer followed the following rules:

    1. They did not use any synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers to grow crops or feed for animals.
    2. They did not use crop or feed that had been genetically modified.
    3. The product are taken care in a great level.(treating them humanely)

Below are the certification logos you should look for on certified organic products.

NASAA The National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia QAI Quality Assurance International Certified Organic

Why do I have to spend extra money to buy organic product?

Organic products have less pesticide on the product. Certainly it will be healthier for your body. There is nothing more important than staying health. Once you loose it, it is too late to regret.

Organic food is more expensive because:

  • Organic farms are still few and far between, therefore it is difficult for them to take advantage of the economies of scale.

Shipping and handling of organic food is more expensive because organic distributors must be careful to clean out or avoid haulers that have stored commercially grown foods that may have had pesticides that would be left behind. Most organic distribution also occurs on a smaller scale making transportation costs higher.

Farmers deal with extra costs when growing organically. Costs such as more labour intensive weeding practices, and more expensive natural fertilisers together with the fact that they are more likely to have lower yields because they suffer a greater loss of food during production since they don't rely on synthetic chemicals to deter all potential maladies from bugs, disease, and weeds.

Organic food generally takes longer to grow without the use of fertilisers. Organic certification bodies charge their members for services, inspections, and the use of their certification labels and or logos. These fees tend to be quite large as inspectors must travel great distances to inspect which is charged back to the grower
