California AIDS Ride 8
Day Three -- June 5th, 2001
King City to Paso Robles
75.95 miles -- 4 hours, 37 minutes, 49 seconds
Yes! We're actually going to get out of camp early today. So, you're probably wondering what the big deal is. Tom & I are both good riders, so time isn't an issue for either of us. The route opens every morning at 6:30am, and there are some riders who are ready to go as soon as it opens. Well, there are definitely advantages to leaving early. Probably the greatest one is that you avoid the HUGE crowd of riders all trying to leave at 7:30 (when we usually get out of camp).

So, today was our day. We got to bike parking bright & early. But wait! Can it be? No! Both Tom & I had flats when when got to our bikes. So much for getting out of camp early. We were destined to SLOWLY ride through the crowd of riders leaving camp.

To slow us down even more, I had a blowout about a mile out of camp (guess I rushed a little too much changing my flat & gave myself a pinch flat). The only good thing is Tom, Don McAdang, Mike Schmitt & Aldo Olano were all riding with me, so I had some company while I changed my second flat of the day. Schwab men to the rescue!

Today's route included one of the bigger hills of the Ride, affectionately known as the "Quad Buster." After all my training, I actually breezed up it. We stopped at the top to cheer on other riders as they were climbing (something I also didn't do last year).

lunch in Bradley Lunch was in the tiny town of Bradley (one school, post office, stables). The school children always have a BBQ on the day the AIDS Ride passes through. This is their largest fundraiser each year. We talked to some of the children, and they told us they use the money to go on field trips and buy classroom equipment. The big trip this year is to Magic Mountain. So, we skipped the AIDS Ride lunch (sandwiches and pasta salad AGAIN) and feasted on burgers and nachos with cheese. Yum!

It was really hot, so we were sitting under the storefront during lunch. Tom & I were screwing around and were going to have a contest to see who could do a wall quad sit for the longest period of time. Stupid move. I slipped again, falling on my left elbow and tailbone (remember the morning of Day One?), hurting myself in the same places again, just as I was beginning to feel a little better.

About a mile after lunch, Tom got another flat (are you counting?). While I waited for him to change it, I stood by the side of the road and sprayed riders with my water bottles as they rode up the hill (much appreciated since it was so hot). One of the sweep vehicles came by and, although we didn't need their help, they stayed and played 80s dance music on the radio so I could dance. Yes, I'm having fun this year! Tom and Lorri -- still smiling

Long, hot day. By the time we arrived at Paso Robles, it was more than one-hundred degrees out! When we walked through camp, the tar on the road melted and gooked up our cleats.

Roger, Jerome, and Philip at the Motel 6 Pool Roger Schefers organized a group of riders from Team Schwab to get rooms at the Motel 6 that night (including us). Wouldn't do it again next year, but it was kinda fun sitting by the pool, then going out for a good Mexican dinner with Jeanne Rougas and Michele Hidalgo. But I really missed being at camp.....
