California AIDS Ride 8
Day Five -- June 7th, 2001
Oceano to Lompoc
55.99 miles -- 3 hours, 36 minutes, 11 seconds
Hills! Today is, by far, the toughest day of the Ride. Everyone talks about the Quad Buster and the Evil Twins, but I said it last year and I'll agree this year, today is the toughest day of the ride. Little tiny hills, big hills, hills that curve around so you don't know where the top is, hills, hills, hills! the first hill of the day

Luckily, I trained so well that even the hills didn't slow me down. It's amazing, but I've had no pain at all this year. Not sure if it's all the riding I did in May (about 300 miles a week), the extra hill training, or yoga, but the Ride sure seems easy this year. But the best part of that is, it gives me enough time & enough confidence to fool around, have fun, and meet new people.

Tom and I went on a little shopping excursion this morning. My camera battery died & I forgot to bring an extra, so we went hunting for one. Sounds easy, right? Well, Oceano is in the middle of nowhere, so it wasn't that simple.

our new tent sign We spent several hours, stopping in every little town we could find (Guadalupe, Santa Maria) and at every little store (including a hardware store). We bought lots of fun toys (bubbles, squirt guns, "For Rent" signs, insect repellant), but couldn't find a camera battery. Just as I was about to give up & just buy a disposable camera, I found a battery in a little Rite AID in Santa Maria.

Okay, so we're back on track & ready to roll. Guess what! Tom got another flat halfway up the first really big hill. Being the industrious soul I am, I pulled out the squirt guns and started squirting the riders as they climbed up the hill. Everyone was so happy! I got a little carried away and used all our water, so we had to hustle to get to the next pit before dehydration set in. Tom with his new toy

Phillip, the tentman Wood We rolled into Lompoc really early, but it's a beautiful camp (with a little lake & playground & volleyball nets). Since we had so much time on our hands, we helped other riders set up their tents and just relaxed a bit. Roger and Jerome lend a helping hand

Oh, did I mention Tom shaved his legs? *giggle*......
