GOLDEN BOY TOURNAMENT
|
Even though our record of 2 wins 3 losses doesn't sound too impressive, all our games were against Premier teams or older or both. You should all be proud of the effort that you put in. Here are the individual comments from the five games.
Won against Portage Trail D5P 2-1
Our first game was a win against a premier team our age. We scored 2 first half goals by Lauryn on a pass from Jenna and a penalty shot from Nicki. We outplayed them in the first half then Serena played a great second half to win the game. It was especially sweet for Breanne against her old team...she played with a lot of intensity and determination!
Lost to Flames D4P 4-1
This older Premier team eventually won the tournament. Another great effort by our team against a better older team. Rochelle scored her first goal this year on a rebound from a great individual rush by Rebecca. Serena again played solid in net. If it weren't for a cheap penalty shot goal and a late weak goal and the score would have been only 2-1.
Lost to Regina United 5-0
We played hard against a very good but very physical (dirty) and foul mouthed team. The aches and pains were mounting but we never quit!
Won against Northwest D4R 2-0
A very exciting playoff game that we should have won in regulation time but we finally prevailed in double overtime. Two good plays by Ruth lead to the victory. A pass from Kaitlin wide to Ruth who cut around the defender and crossed the ball in front to Jenna who scored. Then a few minutes later a lead pass from Ruth to Lauryn for another goal which iced the win!
Lost to Portage Trail D5P 1-0
In a rematch, we again outplayed our Premier opponent during the first half but couldn't score. We had many good chances, specifically by Amy (crossbar) and Steph but couldn't put it in. The wind turned against us in the second half and they scored a late goal to beat us. Breanne and the rest of the defense again played outstanding. That knocked us out of the tournament but we played hard to the end. Well done!

July 7 - Tied with Bonivital Blaze 3-3
|
Another slow start against the first place Blaze had us behind 2-0 (sound familiar?) but Emily scored on a penalty shot late in the half as she was pulled down in the box to cut the lead to 2-1. We played much stronger in the second half but a probably offside goal put us behind 3-1. Emily scored again on a pass from Kaitlin as she beat their two defenders and also the keeper who couldn't handle the shot. Kaitlin scored the tying goal with about 5 minutes to play. Kaitlin again had a very good game and should have had another 2 goals. Rebecca and Lauryn also had good chances, one with the keeper out of the net and a defender making the save. Jenna also played well again. Jessie and Rochelle were solid at midfield. Ruth, Sam, Aly and Nicki had good games on defense. Players of the game were Kaitlin and Emily.

June 30 - Tied with Bonivital Inferno 2-2
|
We clearly outplayed our opponent the entire game but two early mistakes on our part left us down 2-0. We fought back hard and had many chances including Kaitlin who should have had 3-4 goals herself. Others who had good chances were Shannon, Rebecca and Rochelle. Jenna finally scored for us on a penalty shot and we continued to press for the equalizer. We were finally rewarded by a great header goal by Jenna from a corner kick from Nicki. Blizzards!!!!! Lauryn sent a late header just wide late in the game as we almost pulled out a win. Nicki and Alyson had many great corner kicks that we came close to converting. Jessie had a good game and continues to improve.
