"Themepark" shoot
On the mission: Charlz, Chris and Naydz
We'd heard about an abandoned amusement park about a 40 minute scooter
ride from where i live. It's outside Taichung in a relatively beautiful and lush
area called Da-kun...it sounded like it was just up my alley. Bound to be lots of
the rusty remains of man's endevours overgrown by the inevitable. We made
the trip on a stinking hot saturday. The light was bad, a homogenous blanket of
haze making everything appear very soft. It's been abandoned for years, one
or two locals our age can vaugely remember going there as young kids...we
still dont have a number, but i'd say at least 15 years. It's completely
overgrown...especially now, in the height of summer. We were warned about the
fact that there would probably be a lot of insects...so we took some repellant.
We were eaten alive...i must have been bitten about a hundred times by these
nasty black and white striped mosquitoes, they itched for a week.
Getting around inside was'nt easy...a machete would have helped...Chris slipped
and did his elbow for six stiches in one particularly trecherous area. We're not
quiet sure why it was abandoned...but there are some huge cracks in the earth
inside the park...chances are it was declared unstable after the big earthquake
that occured here a couple of years ago. A very trippy mission all in all...some
great shots but looking back, i would have preffered better light and more focus
on the mission ittself...at the time my focus was more in looking for interesting
textures to use in my illustrations. Look out for the return to Katoli...
"night ride" shoot (coming soon!)
On the mission: Charlz and Naydz
A psycadelic ride on the back of my scooter, along Taichung's main road...
"Jungang"...a absolutely hecktic road with at least 5 lanes in either direction, it's
packed with hundreds of cars and billions of scooters... roadside realty is prime
space so most of Jungang is jam packed, chinese style, with bussinesses
loudly proclaiming thier existance in bright neon.
initially i had meant to shoot the lights in the inner city, the idea to shoot from
the back of the scooter was pretty spontaneous...we had to ride the length of
Jungang anyway to get there...naydz did the traffic dodging while i snapped
away on the back...it was completely experimental...ie. i didnt know what i was
doing...i just set the camera to various low shutter speeds and saw what
happened... These are definately some of the best lights-in-motion type
images i've been able to capture, they are already coming in handy in as
illustration textures...complete and utter eye-candy.

"Hong Kong" shoot
On the mission: Charlz and Chris
We did an intense one day in Hong Kong in order to renew our visas for Taiwan...
Flew in sunday night...wham bam thank you mam and out monday evening...
Time for a little shopping and running around...most of the time we were inside
or underground and there was little time for taking pictures...when i did though my
lens was generally pointing skyward...I dont know...i wasn't comfortable in HK...
sure it's increadable....pure sci-fi.....but it felt like rat race supreme...a gross
monument to capitalism...you feel the need here...to have stuff...to buy things
Still, this is one amazing city...id recommend a visit to anyone...but, if youre
from afica... expect to be overwhelmed...
"My Kids" shoot
On the mission: Charlz
Most of the classes i do are hour and a half, twice a week cram classes, with the
exeption of this class...i see them every day for two hours. I allows for a real
teacher - student relationship, it's by far the most rewarding of all my classes
for this reason. They are a particularly charismatic and energetic bunch...and thier
English is amazing...These guys are full of personality...i took my camera into
class one day....these are thier portraits....
