Above is the basic meaning of Sublime. To millions of people, this is all that the word entails. Not that the word itself doesn't have meaning. But to a select group of people, it means so much more. To Sublime fans, the word sublime isn't just a synonym for "supreme" or "lofty." It's a sign for a sound so unique that sublime was the only word fitting. It's a sign for a time when music meant something, when bands, not just Sublime, but others, like Nirvana and Radiohead actaully cared about the music, instead of the image behind it. It's no wonder that the Long Beach Dub Allstars, the band that formed out of Sublime's ashes, tell their listeners that "you should never get your style from watching MTV." Because they know where they come from and what they stand for, and because of the legacy of Sublime left behind them, this statement carries more weight than an entire album full of lighter-than-air boy band pop.

Many fans think Sublime first got their start in 1988, as a garage punk band from SoCal. If you really look into it, however, you'll discover that Sublime got it's start in the late 1970's through the early 1980's. This is when Bradley James Nowell, Sublime's future lead singer/songwriter/guitarist first began to really listen to the different styles of music that would influence his work with Sublime.
