Richard

Living just outside of the Mabe Village, Richard is the enemy of almost every Human on Koholint. Besides being rude, pushy, and manipulative, Richard makes his living collecting the secrets of others and blackmailing them for money, services, and goods.

Despite the protestations of the other islanders, Richard insists that he was once a prince and that he was driven out of Kanalet Castle by an act of rebellion on a part of the servants. Although the rebellion is known of, everyone insists that Richard is not royalty and has never been royalty.

Richard has a passion for tormenting those who he can blackmail, particularly Tracy and Valerie. Throughout the course of the series, he is forever after Link's deep, dark secret, but he always manages to fall sort of learning what it is.

In the end, Richard learns some surprising life lessons.

Richard's love life has been riddled with secrets. As a younger man, he fell desperately in love with a servant girl and they conceived a child. When Richard's mother found out about it, she denied the servant medical attention and told Richard that both the girl and the baby had died. This led to the rebellion that forced Richard from his home. Some ten years later, he fell in love with Valerie. Upon learning her secret, he realized that any relationship between them would be impossible, but continued to pine away for her, manifesting his feelings in the only way he knew how: Torment.
