Other Characters The world of Koholint is complex and fascinating, filled with colorful characters that contribute, in their own, varying ways, to Link's misadventures. Below is a brief catalogue of additional characters. Many of them have little secrets that have consequences on the adventures of the primary heroes.
|
Amanda: Amanda is Zelda’s older sister. She formed a close connection to Link during his early adventures in Hyrule when he destroyed Ganon. As the eldest princess of Hyrule, Amanda is in a political marriage to a Human prince, but she genuinely seems to love him and the two of them have three children together. Owing to her sister’s tragic loss, Amanda has a great fear of the sea and hates to travel by ship. Angelika: One of the Siren’s and also a Nightmare, Angelika holds domain in the Angler’s Tunnel of Koholint. She prefers to think of herself as practical and proactive, but her rash decisions often become her downfall. Artem: Princess Amanda’s Human husband. Artem is a practical man who loves his wife and children very much. Aviva: A healing woman who trained Valerie in the art of collecting and administering herbs. Blaino: The Guardian of Flame’s dungeon. Blaino is a lewd monster with a talent for saying the most inappropriate things he can think of. He seems to have no filter, but he does possess a measure of loyalty to his master. Dawn: One of Marnie and Papahl’s quintuplets who has a knack for getting into trouble. Unlike all of her brothers and sisters, Dawn is inexplicably blond. Dink: Dink is actually named Link and he’s a counterpart of the Hero of Time in a different universe. Unlike the Link of this world, however, Dink is something of a coward, unable to face opposition. He’s horrified of most people, especially the Empress he serves as musician. Through getting to know Zelda, Matilda, and Carry, Dink gains some self confidence and returns to his world a changed man. Elinor: Sometimes referred to as “Madam Meowmeow” Elinor is a friend to animals and to anyone who will listen to her. Although a bit absent minded and none too bright, Elinor is a sweet girl who wants nothing more than to be with her friends and animals. Empress: The stone-hearted ruler of an alternate dimension, the Empress has dreams and ambitions of achieving godhood. She has no problem killing for sport and often casts unfortunate servants into a pit to be devoured by a beast, just to kill time. Erigie: The first love of Richard’s life, Erigie was a chambermaid who served Queen Magdalena of Kanalet Castle. When she gave birth to Richard’s daughter, Dasheme, Magdalena sent away the healer, nearly leading to Erigie’s death and she kidnapped the baby, taking it away. This became the catalyst for the rebellion which drove out Richard. Erigie was named the princess of Koholint and ruled over the isolated servants living in the castle until she was eventually possessed by Iris and destroyed by Link. Eve: A fairy given to Molly on her birthday who turns out to bring near destruction to Koholint. Ezri: Carry’s beloved pet owl also just happens to be the Sage of Courage. Although he speaks only to Link, Valerie, and Zelda, his influence alters the course of events on Koholint Island. Face: A Nightmare who can change his appearance, Face prefers to manipulate people’s emotions in order to get them to do what he wants. Often, he’ll take on the form of beloved dead individuals in order to cause psychological pain. Farore: The Hylian goddess of courage. Farore has set up the island of Koholint as a trial for Link and Zelda. Her motives are shrouded in mystery, but she wants Link to succeed at all costs and has therefore sent Valerie to ensure it. Flame: Flame is the leader of the Nightmares and the eldest sibling. Fierce and methodical, he has no patience for the antics of his younger siblings, least of all Catsy, who he views as an annoyance more than anything else until her prophecies of doom start to come true. Flame gradually becomes more and more desperate as he watches each of his siblings fail, but he’s so stubborn that he refuses to admit it, even when he is wrong. Ganondorf: A humanoid reincarnation of Link’s mortal enemy, Ganon, Ganondorf appears on Koholint briefly when a spell goes terribly wrong. Ruthless and cruel, Ganondorf wants nothing other than revenge against Link for his defeat in Hyrule. Gene: The owner of Bottle Grotto, Gene is an incorporeal Nightmare with a love of shiny things. His dungeon is lavishly decorated and impeccably neat, owing to the fact that he simply isn’t capable of tracking dirt around. He hates the Hylians for touching his things and resents their abilities to enjoy the things which he cannot. Grandma Ulrira: The dotty old woman who lives in the southern part of the Mabe Village and enjoys nothing more than sweeping. Grandpa Ulrira: Virtually a walking encyclopedia of myth and legend, old Grandpa Ulrira shares some of his secret wisdom with Link whenever he’s awake. Hawk: The king of Eagle’s Tower, Hawk has his own agenda which consists entirely of surviving the inevitable downfall of the Nightmares. His loyalties lie with no one and he has no qualms with manipulating and using others to get what he wants, all while feigning ignorance and loyalty toward Flame. Higgins: One of the Wise Men of Hyrule. Higgins was responsible for the upbringing of both Link and Tress. He seems to be more aware of Link’s quest than most other mortals. Hinox: Gene’s dungeon Guardian who enjoys employing psychological torture. Iris: The eldest of the Sirens and one of the most loyal Nightmares to Flame’s cause, Iris takes great pleasure in controlling the lives of the inhabitants of Kanalet Castle. Ivan: Richard’s father, the self-proclaimed king of Koholint who snored a lot. Kurt: Long before Link arrived on the island, Kurt was the first love of Zelda’s life. He left when Tarin drove him away from the village, but returned just in time to square off against Link for Zelda’s affections. Although he proved to be a monster, the memory of Kurt would haunt Link and Zelda’s relationship for a long time. Aside from Zelda, Kurt’s other primary contact in the world of Koholint was Richard, with whom he shared an unusual friendship until Link arrived. Lexx: An inhabitant of the Animal Village, Lexx was the son of a dreamer who yearned for life outside of Koholint and went off to the dungeons, never to be heard from again. Lexx himself became a responsible family man with numerous children. As a rabbit/Human hybrid, he has a great fondness for carrots. Magdalena: Richard’s mother and the one time, self-proclaimed queen of Koholint. She had no tolerance for the mixing of social classes and she hated loud noises. Her actions with regards to the servants of Kanalet Castle eventually led to her own demise when they rose up and rebelled against her and her husband. Makii: The Hylian Hero of Lore. Little is known about Makii, other than the fact that he is close to both Tress and Higgins. Marnie: Ribald and unapologetic, Marnie is the mother of five children. She and her simpering twit of a husband, Papahl, live in the Mabe Village. Marnie is an eternal gossip. She loves to discuss the love lives of others and frequently proves herself to be quite attracted to Link. Nevertheless, she remains a devoted friend to Zelda. Molly: In the southern part of the Mysterious Forest lives Molly, a two hundred year old witch and the oldest mortal inhabitant of Koholint. Molly is beloved by everyone in the village and her birthday has become something of an annual celebration, filled with traditions. Although she’s not a part of the quest to wake the Windfish, Molly is always ready to lend advice to Link or Valerie and will happily perform spells when called upon. Mr. Write: A quirky, nervous young man who lives north of the Mabe Village. Oderic: A loyal servant to Richard’s family who was banished to the depths of the Slime Cavern for his steadfast obedience. He gradually lost his mind, but still had enough sense left to help guide the Hylians through the dungeon. Papahl: Papahl is Marnie’s somewhat dim-witted husband. Although kind-hearted, he’s not exceptionally bright. Queen Gilda: The mother of both Zelda and Amanda, Queen Gilda is an active participant in the administration of law and order in Hyrule. She is very fond of Link for both his heroics and his charm. Summer: A villager of the Animal Village, Summer is a beautiful woman with a fox’s tail and a sharp wit. Tail: The youngest of the Nightmares, he’s the first to fall. He doesn’t say a lot. Tracy: Called “Crazy Tracy” by Richard, Tracy is the potions mistress of the island. Her potions come in handy throughout the course of the series, whether she’s making a complex sleeping draught, or a simple weed killer. Tracy’s most complex relationship is with Richard, who knows her deep, dark secret. Despite the fact that he usually thinks he has the upper hand, Tracy has a remarkable way of reading Richard which always allows her to maintain some power in their relationship. She’s the first to realize Richard is in love with Valerie and the first to point out the many problems he has in courting her. Wills: A chef who lives in the Animal Village. |
