Does it cost anything?

Yes, there is a $15 application fee. This will account for the binder we provide for our weekly meetings, and so on. As far as any other expenses, we at Search and Rescue have packs, or backpacks, in which we carry all our equipment in. We are required to get these items, most of which can be found around your house. Some examples include matches, flashlights, working gloves, etc. Other items which you need to acquire are flagging tape, rain gear, knives, anything you would need to survive out on a search. Uniforms, helmets, and a first aid kit will be provided to you. Black hiking boots are also required. If you become a member of SAR you can receive a 10% discount at the Redwood Trading Post, which is a 5 minute drive from our meeting place at 500 Allerton in Redwood City.

What type of training do I undergo in joining SAR?

Every explorer is required to attend the Academy within 1 year of applying to any explorer agency. The Academy is used to train incoming explorers of what exactly their duties are while volunteering.

There are two academies every year - one beginning in January, and the other in September. Classes are every Sunday for 9 consecutive weeks. Each Sunday begins at 0730 (7:30 AM) and ends at 1730 (5:30 PM). Explorers do undergo PT (Physical Training) from 7:30-8:30 in the morning. The rest of the day is spent in the classroom. It isn't as boring as it seems, however. If you decided to come this far, you should be interested in what you are doing, therefore, you should have a great time interacting with others interested in the same things as yourself.

There is a minor fee to pay for your two shirts needed to be worn during the academy. This fee also accounts for your binder, which you will bring with you everyday you attend each session.

The dress code consists of wearing the shirts provided, and wearing blue jeans with a black belt and tennis shoes. Hair is to be clean-cut and you should be presentable in appearance.
