Division I Championship Game Preview

#1 Scripps Ranch (19-1-1) vs. #3 Bonita Vista (16-3-3)

The Barons find themselves in defense of the Kiwanis Cup. Bonita Vista rose to the occasion last year, defeating regular season points champion Hilltop, 5-4, in the championship game. The Barons need more of the same – to play error free and receive top performances from everyone o the team, particularly goaltender Doug Lentz. The Barons have a glimmer of promise after playing the Falcons to a 5-5 draw in the teams’ last meeting. Team scoring leader Joey Galeno had four goals and an assist and Lentz made 30 saves. If Bonita Vista can forge a lead through two periods, it might just be enough to counter the superior depth owned by Scripps Ranch. In two playoff games, Galeno leads the Barons in scoring with five goals and five assists.Defenseman Reuben Felizardo had a hat trick in the team’s 6-4 semifinal win against Castle Park.

The Falcons are led by superstar siblings Dan and Rick Comrie but are buttressed by a solid group of unsung heroes led by scorers Jennings Brieck and Andrew Berrier and defensemen Chris Hu and Cameron Cerone. Players on this team have roles to follow – if they do, the recipe is usually one that begets success. With the defense playing back, it will make it difficult for the Barons to score against either of the team’s able netminders, Colin Beam or Chris George. As loaded as this year’s team is compared to the rest of the conference, the best is likely to come for the sophomore-laden Falcons. Rising to the occasion also befits the two Comries. In the team's 8-4 semifinal win against La Jolla Country Day, Dan Comrie contributed three goals and two assists while Rick Comrie added two goals and three assists. Brieck had a goal and two assists while second-half standout Greg Best scored two goals.

Division II Championship Game Preview

Montgomery (6-17-1) vs. Sweetwater (9-14-1)

The Aztecs have defeated the Red Devils in two of three meetings this season, including the last two matchups, despite the Devils’ superior regular season record. Montgomery could be peaking at the right time of the season. The Aztecs went undefeated in the round-robin playoff bracket, skating to a 3-0-1 record, scoring a 5-0 shutout against Sweetwater in the process.

The Aztecs are led offensively by Josh Royal and Bobby Palma. Palma scored five goals and five assists in the team’s opening two playoff seeding games and added a goal in the second round of games. Royal leads the team in playoff goalscoring with 10. Royal and Jamil Patiag picked up the pace in the second round of playoff games. Royal had five goals and two assists after scoring five goals in the opening round while Patiag had two goals and two assists. Other contributors include Chris Troie (3 goals, 7 assists) and Mike Mortensen in front of goaltender Danny Valle.

Sweetwater is guided on the floor by top scorers Marvey Ferrer and Gerardo Ortega, playmakers Brandon Fox and Richard Kolerich and goaltender Louie Valentine. Depth, or the lack of it at crucial times, has been the team’s biggest obstacle. Valentine recorded the first playoff shutout in conference history. The emergence of Steve Martinez has playoff scorer should help. The team’s strength is in its balanced scoring – there is no one player an opponent can key on.
