Scripps Ranch's Dan Comrie named Metro's 2001-2002 Player of the Year

By Phillip Brents

Scripps Ranch High School sophomore forward Dan Comrie was the recipient of the Metro Conference’s 2001-2002 High School Roller Hockey Player of the Year award after leading the Falcons to an 18-1-1 regular season record and a runner-up finish in the Division I championship playoffs.

Comrie led the two-year-old conference — the state’s only officially-sanctioned CIF high school league — in scoring with 105 points on 61 goals and 44 assists. He averaged more than five points per game and teamed with older brother Rick Comrie, a junior defenseman on the Scripps Ranch team, to create one of the most dreaded sibling combinations in the sport. Together, the two Comrie brothers combined for 182 points on 92 goals and 90 assists. Rick Comrie, a likewise First Team Selection, totaled 31 goals and 46 assists for 77 points to finish third in conference scoring.

The Comries have played roller hockey for nine years and head a talented, young cast of Scripps Ranch players who have yet to reach their full potential. Their arrival in the Metro Conference has clearly raised the overall level of play. Both brothers are also equally adept on the ice hockey rink. Dan Comrie was part of the Junior Gulls program that advanced to the national championships last year.

“We have our own styles. Dan is a forward; I’m a defenseman. But we both work together well,” said Rick Comrie.

“We have a chemistry,” interjected younger brother Dan.

“I know where he’s going to be. I mostly pass to him,” Rick said.

Joining the two Falcon standouts on the All-Metro Conference First Team are Eastlake High senior goaltender Azuma Franklin; Bonita Vista High junior forward Joey Galeno; Castle Park High sophomore forward Richard Garcia; La Jolla Country Day High sophomore forward Nathan Sigmund; Bonita Vista High senior defenseman Doug Lentz and La Jolla Country Day High junior defenseman Frankie Warren.

Galeno (47 goals, 25 assists) scored the game-winning goal in Bonita Vista’s 3-2 overtime championship game victory against Scripps Ranch while Garcia (47 goals, 47 assists), Sigmund (38 goals, 25 assists) and Warren (21 goals, 18 assists) led their respective teams to semifinal-round playoff appearances. Lentz earned recognition for his outstanding play on both defense and between the pipes, leading Bonita Vista to three playoff wins as a goaltender, while Franklin completed a standout four-year career at Eastlake to receive recognition as the conference’s top goaltender during regular season play.

The All-Metro Conference Second Team included Scripps Ranch sophomore goaltender Colin Beam, Castle Park junior forward Arturo Garcia; Castle Park sophomore forward Don McGraw; Hilltop sophomore forward Erick Morgan; Bonita Vista junior defenseman Reuben Felizardo; La Jolla Country Day freshman Max Guise and Eastlake senior defenseman Erik Gallardo.
