Division I

Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Skate San Diego

 

(3) Bonita Vista 6, (6) Eastlake 3

Joey Galeno had four goals and one assist to lead the defending Kiwanis Cup champion Barons while Brent Nash had a goal and assist. Bonita Vista overcame an early 1-0 deficit on a goal by Royce Leomo to lead 4-2 at the end of the first period on three goals by Galeno and a single goal by Jason San Agustin. The Barons extended their lead to 5-2 on a second-period goal by Galeno before Eastlake’s Reese Larson, assisted by Leomo, scored with 12:37 to play to cut the lead to 5-3. But Nash put the game out of reach with 6:41 to play on a backhand shot taken after Galeno had first bounced a shot off the pads of Titan senior goalie Azuma Franklin. Erik Gallardo finished the game with two assists for Eastlake, which outshot Bonita Vista 21-18. The third-seeded Barons (15-3-3) advance to play second-seeded Castle Park (15-5-0) in Thursday’s semifinals. Eastlake ended its season 11-9-1. "I thought our team was passing so well. We click always well in the playoffs," said BV senior Doug Lentz, who made 18 saves in the net.

 

(4) La Jolla Country Day 11, (5) Hilltop 3

Team scoring leader Nathan Sigmund had three goals and two assists to lead the Torres to their first-ever varsity playoff win. Frankie Warren had two goals and two assists. LJCD rushed out to an 8-0 lead before the Lancers, last year’s regular season champions, scored three unanswered goals. Max Guise had two goals and an assist for the Torres, who outshot Hilltop 44-19. Adam Arena also had two goals for LJCD, which received points from nine different players. "It was a really good win," said LJCD assistant captain Jordan Simkin, who was the fifth Torres player to notch two goals in the game. "It was good that we played hard the whole game, getting ready for Thursday’s game against Scripps Ranch. It was good that everyone got a chance to play." Picking up assists for LJCD were Garrett Iaco, Tristan Gomez, Sam Hodgson and goalie Ben Bartlett (16 saves). Erick Morgan scored all three Lancer goals while Eddie Hernandez had 34 saves. The Torres (16-5-0) move on to play top-seeded Scripps Ranch (18-1-1) in the division semifinals. Hilltop ended its season 13-7-1.

 

Division II

Game #1

Sweetwater 5, Mar Vista 2

The Red Devils received goals from five players -- Richard Kolerich, Marvey Ferrer, Brandon Fox, Gerardo Ortega and Steve Martinez -- in skating past the Mariners. Sweetwater led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Kolerich and Ferrer. Second-period goals by Fox, Ortega and Martinez sealed the win. Fox and Ferrer also picked up assists. Clint Jones scored twice for Mar Vista.

 

Game #2

Montgomery 7, Chula Vista 2

Sophomore forward Bobby Palma received the team’s Most Valuable Player award for the game after leading the Aztecs with two goals and three assists. Palma’s record for most goals scored in one game this season is seven. Jamil Patiag had two goals and one assist while Chris Troie added a goal and two assists for Montgomery, which broke open a tight 4-2 first-period lead with three unanswered second-period goals. Josh Royal racked up two goals for the Aztecs. David Rodriguez (assisted by David Ruiz) and Ernie Pozzoz (assisted by Thomas Doran) scored for the Spartans.

 

Game #3

Sweetwater 5, Southwest 0

Marvey Ferrer notched a hat trick and Brandon Fox added a goal and assist to help the Red Devils (8-13-1) improve to 2-0 in playoff competition. Steve Martinez contributed two assists while Gerardo Ortega scored one goal. Sweetwater outshot Southwest 28-2. Louie Valentine stopped both Raider shots to record the first-ever playoff shutout in Division II play.

 

Game #4

Montgomery 6, Mar Vista 6

Josh Royal scored his third goal of the game to tie the score and keep the Aztecs (4-17-1) unbeaten (1-0-1) in playoff competition. Bobby Palma posted his second consecutive five-point game with three goals and two assists for Montgomery. Michael Mortensen and Chris Troie both added two assists for the Aztecs, who trailed 4-3 after the first period. Anthony Arciga had a hat trick for Mar Vista, which also received two goals from Roque Luna and a goal and three assists from Clint Jones.

 

Game #5

Chula Vista 5, Southwest 2

The Raiders, still searching for their first win of the season, got out on the scoreboard first on a goal by Alvin Zurland, assisted by Tony Crenshaw, but the Spartans responded with three unanswered goals to take a two-goal first-period lead. Crenshaw narrowed the score to 3-2 but Chula Vista closed out the game with a pair of unanswered goals by team scoring leader Thomas Doran. David Ruiz and Willie Wiser scored single goals for the Spartans, who received assists from David Rodriguez and Anthony Tomayo. Chris Sidhu recorded the assist on Crenshaw’s goal.

 

Division II standings: Sweetwater 2-0-0, 4 points; Montgomery 1-0-1, 3 points; Chula Vista, 1-1-0, 2 points; Mar Vista 0-1-1, 1 point; Southwest 0-2-0, 0 points.
