The Golden Eagles got goals from Scott Yeomans, Tait Campbell and Kevin Eaton to counter an opening goal by the Falcons’ Brandon Blum.   

 

San Marcos 6, St. Augustine 5

Richard McDaniel set up the game-tying goal scored by Nolan Schmuckle with 2:22 to play and then scored the game-winner with 1:43 left on the clock to lead the Knights to the come-from-behind win. McDaniel finished the game with a goal and four assists. Schmuckle finished the game with two goals while Evan Jones, who drew the assist on the game-winning goal, had a goal and assist. Jeff Umphries scored his second goal of the game with 8:36 to play in the final period to give St. Augustine a 5-4 lead.

 

Vista 6, Fallbrook 5/OT

Anthony Dykes scored an unassisted goal with 3:11 left in the overtime period to lead the Panthers to the win. Fallbrook had forced the extra period when Justin Craw scored an unassisted goal with 1:32 remaining in regulation time. Vista had taken a 3-0 lead in the game on goals by James Peattie, Dennis Furlong and Matt Lindsey. The loss negated a three-goal performance by Fallbrook’s Alex Brust. Jeremy Craw had a goal and assist for Fallbrook.

Patrick Henry outshot the Sundevils 30-26 but Mt. Carmel received two goals from Carter Bell and a single goal from Talon Koch in scoring the shut

 

Quarterfinal Playoffs

Feb. 20, 2002 at Escondido Sports Center

 

San Pasqual 7, Carlsbad 3

The Golden Eagles eliminated last year’s conference playoff champion behind two goals and an assist from Kevin Eaton. San Pasqual led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Eaton and Adon Galindo and increased the edge to 3-0 on a goal early in the second period by Steve Collier. Carlsbad narrowed the deficit on the first of two goals by Tim Carr but the Golden Eagles would go on to socre four goals goals in the game, including two by Eaton to put San Pasqual ahead 5-1. Ryan Campbell and Scott Yeomans closed out scoring for the Gold Eagles, who finished the game with a 34-25 shot advantage. Campbell and Yeomans each also picked up an assist for San Pasqual. Tim Collier scored Carlsbad’s final goal.

 

Poway 7, Vista 1

Jonathan Fraser led the victorious Titans with two goals and two assists while Kyle Broderick scored two goals and Timothy Terry contributed a goal and assist. Poway, which built an early 3-0 lead, outshot Vista 27-21 with the Titans also receiving goals from Kyle Broderick and Brent Ozaki. Matt Lindsey scored the lone goal for the Panthers.

 

Granite Hills 7, San Marcos 5

Matt Cornelius had three goals and one assist to lead the second-seeded Eagles, who broke a 5-5 tie on goals by Will Charland and Aaron Torres in the final 39 seconds. The Knights received two goals each from Evan Jones and Brandon Ashley in the loss. Granite Hills took a 2-0 lead on goals 1:03 apart by Cornelius and Torres. Cornelius’ jump goal was assisted by Torres while Cornelius set up Torres. Nolan Schmuckle put San Marcos on the board on a goal with 8:40 to play in the opening period. The Eagles increased their lead to 3-1 by scoring the only goal in the second period. Cornelius got that goal, assisted by Johnny Opsal. Jones narrowed the score to 3-2 with the first goal in the third period but Granite Hills regained its two-goal lead when Herbert Schriber scored midway through the period. Jones scored again, just under a minute after Schriber, to trim the San Marcos deficit to 4-3 and Ashley notched the first of his two goals 42 seconds later to tie the game. Cornelius gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead on an unassisted goal with 3:07 to play in regulation but the Knights stormed back with the equalizing goal, scored once more by Ashley, with just 1:58 left in the third period. But Tommy Neer set up Charland’s go-ahead 6-5 goal with 39 seconds to play and Torres clinched the advancement win on an unassisted goal with five seconds left. Richard McDaniel had two assists for San Marcos. Granite Hills will play San Pasqual, a 7-3 quarterfinal-round winner against defending champion Carlsbad, in the semifinals.

 

Rancho Bernardo 3, Mt. Carmel 2

Jared Goodrich had two goals to lead the top-seeded Broncos but it was Jordan Goodrich’s goal with 5:45 to play in regulation time that stood up as the game-winner. Michael Baumker had both goals for Mt. Carmel. His second goal, with 3:38 to play, narrowed the RB lead to 3-2. The Broncos will play fourth-seeded Poway for the right to advance to this year’s championship game.

 

 

Semifinals

Granite Hills 8, San Pasqual 5

Aaron Torres, Tommy Neer, Will Charland and Johnny Opsal all had two goals to lead the second-seeded Eagles to a first-time appearance in the championship game. Neer also contributed two assists in the game along with teammate Matt Cornelius. Charland also had an assist as Granite Hills built up a 4-1 first-period advantage. The Eagles added four more goals in the second period. San Pasqual received a goal and three assists from Nick Popoff while Scott Yeomans added a goal and assist. Steve Collier, Andy Yeomans and Tait Campbell all scored single goals for San Pasqual, which claimed a 34-20 shot advantage in the loss.

 

Rancho Bernardo 6, Poway 3

The top-seeded Broncos earned a berth in the championship game on the strength of three goals and an assist by Jared Goodrich. Kevin Melsner, David Drasin and Wes Jones all chipped in with goals as RB skated to a 4-1 first-period lead and took a 5-2 lead into the final period. Kyle Broderick had a goal and two assists for Poway, which also received goals from Todd Lindsay and Brent Ozaki.

Broncos overcome early Granite Hills lead, win in overtime

David Drasin’s goal at the 6:11 mark of sudden-death overtime gave top-seeded Rancho Bernardo a 7-6 victory against second-seeded Granite Hills in the championship game to wrap up the 2002 San Diego County High School Roller Hockey Conference playoffs. The Broncos finished 2-0 in the 12-team playoff bracket after receiving a first-round bye and completed the season with an overall 11-1-2 record, inclusive of postseason competition.

Drasin drew the assist on the game-tying goal scored by teammate Jared Goodrich at the 9:18 mark of the third period to cap a three-goal third period by Rancho Bernardo that erased a 5-3 lead through two periods by Granite Hills (11-3-0). Goodrich led the Broncos with three goals and two assists in the title game. Matt Wick also notched a hat trick for Rancho Bernardo while adding an assist. Kevin Melsner chipped in with two assists for the first-time county club champions.

Granite Hills, which scored four unanswered goals to lead 4-1 at one point in the contest after surrendering the jump goal to the Broncos, was paced in the championship game by Aaron Torres with three goals and one assist and Matt Cornelius with two goals. Tommy Near collected a goal and two assists while Will Charland aided the Granite Hills’ effort with three assists.

Wick gave Rancho Bernardo, the regular season Inland League champions a quick 1-0 lead just 29 seconds into the game when he scored off a pass from Melsner. However, Granite Hills – the regular Eastern League champions – responded with unanswered goals in the opening period by Torres, Neer and Cornelius. Granite Hills took its largest lead of the game – 4-1 – when Cornelius notched his second goal of the game just 15 seconds into the second period. Rancho Bernardo came back with a pair of unanswered goals scored less than two minutes apart by Goodrich to trim the Granite Hills lead to 4-3 but the Eastern League champions ended the period with a two-goal lead when Torres scored off a pass from Charland. The Broncos once again narrowed the Granite Hills lead to a single goal, 5-4, when Wick scored his second goal of the game 1:47 into the final period. Granite Hills then went ahead 6-4 less than a minute later on another goal by Torres. Rancho Bernardo then closed out regulation play with the last two goals. Wick brought the Broncos to within one goal, 6-5, when he scored with 10:59 to play, assisted by Goodrich. Capitalizing on the momentum, Rancho Bernardo tied the game, 6-6, just under two minutes later.

In the overtime period, Broncos goaltender Ryan Bracamonte stopped all Granite Hills shots he faced while Dustin Coyle was charged with the loss.
