Who are the Sons of Confederate Veterans?

The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. Organized at Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.

In a speech at New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1906, Lieutenant General Stephen Dill Lee, Commanding General, United Confederate Veterans, charged the SCV formally:

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit the vindication of the Cause for which we fought; to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved and which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."

To this end the SCV has ongoing programs at the local, state, and national levels which offer members a wide range of activities. Preservation work, marking Confederate soldier's graves, historical re-enactments, scholarly publications, and regular meetings to discuss the military and political history of the War Between the States are only a few of the activities sponsored by local camps.

Heritage, not Hate!!

Locally, our camp was organized in Picayune, Mississippi, in February of 1995. Prospective members appeared attracted to the prospect of participation in an organization whose fundamental basis embraces a philosophy of honoring heritage while banishing from it's ranks any indication of hate! Organizers held firm to the premise that "Racist need not apply!"

The selection of a name for our camp was an easy task as a number of our members are directly descended from the officers and soldiers comprising the original "Gainesville Volunteers" of Hancock County, Mississippi. Company G, 3rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., was formed in the now non-existent town of Gainesville, along the scenic Pearl River. As the "Gainesville Volunteers"" we seek to honor the memory of those proud soldiers and the community and nation from which they came. The community of Gainesville came to an end in the 1960's as the land it set on came under the control of a new NASA facility, the present day John C. Stennis Space Flight Center.

Our camp has taken to heart Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee's, charge to the SCV. We are a very active camp. Click on our Camp Calendar link to view our schedule of up-coming events. Readers may also review our past activities.
