Historical Marker Project

Hancock Rebels

Company C, 38th Mississippi  Infantry, CSA

On Tuesday, May 29, 2007, after four years of work, the Gainesville Volunteers erected their second Mississippi Dept. of Archives & History-approved historical marker, this one to the "Hancock Rebels," Co. C, 38th MS Infantry (Mounted), the only Confederate company known to have been raised at Picayune. The marker is on the front lawn of the Pearl River County Welcome Center on I-59 as you come into Pearl River County from Slidell, Louisiana.

If you're passing that-a-way, stop by and tell the wonderful Welcome Center ladies (who love the marker) how much you appreciate the new addition!

Pictured (l-r) Adj. Jim Huffman, Comdr. Russ Foster, Frank Spiess, Frank Egger, and Tony Parker.  Compatriot Jake Manger & his lovely wife were also with us, but had to leave before the photo could be taken.   Hurrah for our glorious Confederate forebears! -- Jim Huffman, Adj./Ed., Gainesville Vols

Note: The official Hancock Rebels Marker Dedication ceremony is on the calendar for Spring 2008 (date to be determined).
