QUESTION: Which MediaCorp TV Channel 5 show is the longest-running and also the highest-rated show to date? Answer: Crimewatch.
Yes, it's true. The docu-drama, which re-enacts real local crimes, has consistently had the highest overall average ratings for the past 10 years. And it's celebrating its 25th anniversary next year with a special airing on Jan 29 at 8.30pm.
"The first episode of Crimewatch went on air in November 1986 and more than half a million viewers were said to have been glued to their TV screens," recalled producer Cynthia Chew. The show was launched as part of the National Crime Prevention Council's efforts to curb crime.
"At that time, there were no local English dramas and so Crimewatch not only filled that void, but had an extra edge: The stories told were based on true stories.
"And, furthermore, it helped convey crucial crime prevention tips which, until today, are still very much appreciated by viewers," Chew said.
She believes that Crimewatch is still successful today for the same reason. "Some episodes (also) carry stories appealing to the public for information. This allows you to participate in helping the police solve crimes," she added.
To produce an episode of Crimewatch, numerous meetings are held with members of the Singapore Police Force and photos of crime scenes and victims are scrutinised.
"Details right up to the position where the body was found, the period of decomposition and the evidence found at the scene of the crime need to be recreated," Chew said.
Chew also works with the police to ensure accuracy while filming, where they use real guns, handcuffs, police vehicles, lockups and interview rooms. And in nearly all of the episodes, the very same police investigators who solved the crimes appear. All this accounts for what is perhaps the most important reason for the show's success: "The degree of 'reality' is extremely high in every episode of Crimewatch," said Chew.
Catch Crimewatch on Oct 23 at 9pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 5. The Best Of Crimewatch starts on Dec 29 at 9pm.
