A Campaign Setting for Dungeons
and Dragons (Third Edition)
Elandar
is a diverse fantasy realm with an ancient-world feel
(think of The Iliad crossed with The Lord of the Rings). In
terms of earth history, the Elandar
campaign is set in an era comparable to the early Iron Age (circa 900
BC). For inspiration refer to the Old Testament stories of King David or
the Homeric poems of Mycenaean Greece. Compared to traditional
high-fantasy D&D campaigns (usually similar to earth's Middle
Ages), Elandar is
less technologically advanced and less populated, with more unsettled and untamed
space. The major races are humans, elves, half-elves, and dwarves, but
half-orcs (from savage borderlands of the north),
gnomes (from the Lowhills), and halflings
(from the Three Shires) are also present. Magic is a very real presence
throughout the land, but magical items are rare enough to hold great value and
only a small fraction of the population can actually practice magic. All
standard spells, races, and character classes (except the Monk) are available.

Elandar is a
sizable island continent covered mainly with flat, fertile grasslands. It
is watered by numerous river systems, most notably the Merai
(which flows from the Great Plains Lake to the Great Northern Sea), the Vaia (flowing from the Goldspires
through the Lake Falla basin), the Silvana (flowing from Darkwood
Peak to the Great Delta), the Mira (flowing from the Nameless Peak through the
Cape of Miramar depression), and the Lefira (which
flows from the Nameless Peak to the Great Middle Sea). Except for the
large expanses of oak-filled Greenwood,
connifer-filled Darkwood,
and tropical Havenwood, the land is only lightly
forested. A small patch of bogs can be found in the deep
south, and a stretch of flat desert is located along the southwest
coast. Much of the north is dominated by a vast, prairie-topped plateau
called the Horse Plains, the continent’s chief breeding ground for
horses. On the mainland there is one major mountain range, the Goldspires, although there are other smaller ranges on the
islands to the north (the Drakespires on the Isle of Drakir and the Blackspires on Cassamar). Extending from the southern heights of the
Goldspires are a series of foothills
called the Lowhills, inhabited by the gnome clans as
well as tribes of savage humanoids.
